Every Monday here at The Mortal Instruments Source is Movie Monday, where we talk about one of the many topics involving the movie adaptation of “City of Bones.”
Let’s face it, when it comes to the film adaptation of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” the one thing we are all dying to know is who is going to take on the coveted role of one Jace Wayland.
It has been months since the announcement came that Alex Pettyfer, one of the more popular Jace contenders among fans, was offered the role of one cocky, sarcastic and undeniably sexy shadowhunter, Jace Wayland Morgenstern Herondale Lightwood. But for simplicity’s sake, let’s just call him Jace Wayland.
With Lily Collins cast as Clary Fray back in December of last year, the process of casting Jace has been a long, arduous and tortuous one.
It has been confirmed that Collins has read with several actors for the role of Jace and Cassandra Clare herself said that Screen Gems had narrowed the list down to about six or eight actors that are in strong contention.
The good thing about the drawn-out process is that Screen Gems is taking its time to find the perfect Jace. Because, let’s face it, when casting Jace Wayland he’d better be perfect.
Here’s what our Clary (Collins) thinks embodies the perfect Jace:
“Jace is confident and knows he’s confident,” Collins explained. “He’s good-looking and knows he’s good-looking. He’s got that je ne sais quoi, in that he walks into a room and you go, ‘Wow.’ He knows he’s the best thing in the room. He’s got to have wit but also be very vulnerable, and I think it’s hard. I think a lot of actors don’t necessarily want to show vulnerability, but [for] this character, it’s completely necessary but, at the same time, that overconfidence as well. I think it’s going to be that thing where they walk into a room and you do a reading and go, ‘Wow, I really can’t see anyone else as this character,’ so it’s going to be an interesting process.”
So the question becomes, what characteristics does an actor need to possess in order to pull off the cocky Jace Wayland?
- Those gorgeous blonde locks
- That wonderful, sarcastic sense of humor
- Those good looks
THE POPULAR JACE CONTENDERS
Alex Pettyfer was a longtime fan favorite before the film rights for “The Mortal Instruments” were optioned by Unique Pictures back in August 2009.
Pettyfer was offered the role in February and since then has taken the time to think his options through. Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper confirmed in April that they were still actively pursuing Pettyfer. Cassandra Clare herself even spoke to Pettyfer on the phone when she met with the studio in April.
Pettyfer caught a bit of a bad rap for his supposed behavior when on the set of “I Am Number Four” but his fans have rallied behind him in support. You might say that he was embracing his inner Jace Wayland.
The status of Pettyfer’s negotiations with Screen Gems are unknown at this point but they are ongoing.
Max Irons became a popular Jace contender when Cassandra Clare voiced her admiration of him on Twitter. Before you could blink there were fan pages for “Max Irons for Jace” everywhere.
What is it with these Brits?
Irons saw his first starting role in “Red Riding Hood” where he at times exhibited key Jace-like characteristics. After this interview (part one, part two) with Jimmy Kimmel, fans fell in love with Irons’ charisma and no doubt believed that he could in fact take on the role of Jace.
To to mention that his father is Jeremy Irons so great acting is in his blood.
Irons has met with Screen Gems about the role of Jace and has even thanked fans for their support.
Is Irons one of the final six or eight actors who are strong contenders for Jace? We can only wait to see how this plays out.
Ed Speleers was always a quiet candidate for the role of Jace Wayland but when his name appeared on IMDB.com, rumored to have been cast as Jace, fans began to take notice.
In photos, like the one above and this one, Speleers gives off a Jace-like charisma and fans have taken notice.
It’s no secret that Speleers has read and rather enjoyed “The Mortal Instruments,” as he tweeted Cassandra Clare to gush about the world she created.
So now I ask you, “Mortal Instruments” fans. Who is your pick to play Jace Wayland in the upcoming film adaptation of “The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones?”
