Movie Monday: Bringing Clary and Jace’s chemistry to life on the big screen

Perhaps one of the biggest contributing factors as to why it took so long to cast Jace Wayland (other than the whole Alex Pettyfer situation), was that the producers were looking not only for an actor that embodied Jace but one who also hit it off with Lily Collins, our Clary Fray. In order to portray Clary and Jace's relationship successfully on the big screen, the producers were faced with the daunting task of pairing two young actors who have great chemistry together. Turns out Jamie Campbell Bower is the guy for Collins and for Screen Gems. After the reassuring words from author Cassandra Clare (really, who knows these two characters and their relationship better than she does), it's safe to say: mission accomplished.

"He auditioned with Lily, and he and Lily had incredible chemistry that sort of blazed off the scene. I’m just sitting here watching this on my computer, and you know, he was not the only person they’ve ever sent me to look at. I’ve gotten lots of headshots and this and that, and I’m watching the audition and I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen. And it’s an incredible feeling to see that even as an audition. This is amazing. He was snarky funny where he needed to be snarky funny, and he was badass where he needed to be badass. And he and Lily were incredible together."

While there are still some doubters in regards to Bower's casting, Collins herself said that she knew he was her Jace from the beginning.

“The second that we had the audition I think everyone pretty much knew that he had that quality of Jace and he nailed it,” Collins told MTV News at the MTV Movie Awards.

In an interview with Hollywood Crush, Clare revealed that one of the scenes that Collins and Bower acted out together was the greenhouse scene, more widely known as the kissing scene. I speak for everyone when I say that we would love to see that audition. The one that is "unfreakingbelievable."

Almost as important as the chemistry between actors on-screen is their relationship off-screen. Already it seems like the two young actors have developed that co-star chemistry. Clare recalled a moment from the screen test when Bower had Collins laughing off camera.

“It was quite funny, in the greenhouse scene, there’s a line where he says something to Clary about, ‘You should have thought about that before you kissed me,’ and she says, ‘kissed you?’ Meaning I started it?” Clare recalled from Bower’s audition with Collins. “And he says, ‘Yeah, it wasn’t that memorable for me either,’ and walks off doing the Jace walk-off, which he did great. Then he’d say something off-screen to make Lily laugh! And she would try not to laugh, and it was unbelievably cute. Like, he’d walk off and say, [affecting a British accent], ‘Yeah, you were rubbish anyway.’”

Ultimately we will have to wait until after filming begins to see their chemistry on the big screen but if the audition is any indication, get ready to swoon.

Clary and Jace’s relationship is complicated to say the least. Their relationship is pushed to the ultimate extremes and they both struggle to deal with the differing dynamics that their relationship undergoes.

It’s difficult enough for Jace to open up to anyone, yet alone truly love and care for someone else, so when he learns that Clary is his sister (or so he believes at the time), the mantra “to love is to destroy and to be the one loved is to be the one destroyed” really comes full circle for him. Jace is forced to deal with his feelings and the situation in “City of Ashes” and “City of Glass” and we really see just how difficult it is for him.

Bower has shown his versatility when it comes to taking on diverse roles and each time he has delivered. I believe there is no better actor that can really get his grip on the role and really bring the Jace we all know and love to life on the big screen.

For Clary, not only is she thrust into this foreign world, but she discovers the beauty and the curse of first love. She is captivated by Jace and these new feelings. When she learns that her and Jace are brother and sister, not only does she struggle with it but she also struggles with Jace’s reaction.

While Collins is still relatively a newcomer to the acting scene, she has shown a great passion for the character of Clary and for the series and has shown some flashes of Clary as Lucy in “Priest.”

One of the challenges for Collins and Bower will be to bring Clary and Jace’s relationship to life. If they can do that then this film franchise will truly be something special.

  1. I cannot wait to see two of the most brilliant young actors bringing two of my fave fictional characters to life on the big screen….It’s bound to sizzle and it’ll be epic! I couldn’t imagine anyone else as Clary and Jace, and can only hope that Screen Gems are this successful regarding the casting of all the other characters. At first, I admit I was annoyed with the casting of Jace taking so long, but now I’m truly glad that they took their time and chose Jamie. Hopefully things will start to pick up from here, but even if they continue taking their time – I’ll know it’s because they want the best possible people for the job!
Looking at Tegan’s super-cool manip, I’m almost jealous of Lily, as she’ll be fortunate enough to experience Jamie’s talent first hand, LOL. 🙂

  2. Wonderful post! It pretty much summarizes how I feel about the choices they’ve made so far for the movie. I admit that at first I hated the idea of Jamie being Jace based on the roles he played in the past and how he looks/dresses in real life. I just didn’t think he had it in him to bring to life the character I imagined so vivadly in my mind.

However, after watching a few scenes of Camelot and seeing photos of him with un-Jamie-like hair and clothes, I started to change my mind. And then of course, reading Cassie’s reaction to seeing his audition with Lily, that just sealed the deal for me. If the creator of those characters can have such a strong reaction to just the audition, can you imagine how it’s going to be in the actual film? Too bad they don’t start filming tomorrow because I’m dying to get a first glimpse of Jamie and Lily looking like Jace and Clary. Entertainment Weekly, you better have that cover shoot already planned for October/November ;).

  3. I finally was able watch some ‘Camelot’ and I am very pleased with his abilities! I can’t wait to see the Jace hair. It’s silly but I’m worried about it. Happy about JCB now and I was pretty traumitzed when they first cast him–so for me, that’s saying a lot : D Can’t wait!!!!

    • You’re not the only one worried about the hair ;). I think it’s one of my biggest worries LOL. I don’t know why but if they don’t get it right, it might just ruin it a little for me.

For example, in Twilight-Ecplise, Kristen Stewart wore a wig because she cut her hair short for another movie. All I could think about while watching her was “that totally looks like a wig”. It bugged me that much and so it ruined the movie a little for me. I know it sounds stupid but that’s how I felt.

      • Ugh that wig! It was so obvious and it just looked all wrong. I’m not worried at all. Jamie can rock short hair, longer hair, any kind of hair style. Though we are al really anxious to see him all Jaced up.

  4. One thing about Lily though. Her tantrum in the beginning of ‘Preist’ was pretty forced. Hard for me to believe. Her non speaking emotional scenes were great though. I need to watch more of her stuff….

  5. You have no idea how big of a grin I had on my face when reading this. This just adds to my excitement on a whole new level! It’s like kerosene poured onto fire! Yes, I’m quite passionate about this whole Jamie as Jace and Lily as Clary. Will the year 2012 hurry up already???

  6. Love that pic!!.. made it all real for me!

  7. I’ve become obsessed with JCB since learning that he’s playing Jace. He’s so cute and i even watched Sweeny Todd last night so i could see him act. Brilliant! He’ll be a great Jace. But truthfully, i didn’t really care who played him, just so long as it wasn’t Pettyfer…got my wish! XD
