Official synopsis for film adaptation of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ revealed

The official (and temporary) synopsis for film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, starring Lily Collins (Clary Fray) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland) was unveiled at the American Film Market, it was announced today by Collider.

CLARY FRAY (Lily Collins) is an ordinary Brooklyn teenager until the night she meets the mysteriously tattooed JACE, who turns out to be a half-angel warrior known as a Shadowhunter. When Clary finds out her mother JOCELYN has been abducted, she desperately hopes Jace will be able to help. After a whirling golden portal transports her across time and space in a heartbeat, Clary realizes she too has the powers of the Shadowhunters. But can she harness them in time to save her mother?

Clary, Jace and their fellow Shadowhunters endure one breathtaking battle after another against vampire, warlocks and demons—only to discover Jocelyn hid a terrible secret from the fiercest warrior of all: VALENTINE. Cast out from the world of Shadowhunters, Valentine abducted Jocelyn believing she had a powerful tool known as the Mortal Cup. Using her newfound gifts, Clary finds the Cup, only to be brutally betrayed and forced to relinquish it.

Still reeling from this setback and racing to save Jocelyn before it’s too late, Clary finds herself caught in a battle between forces she barely understands. Based on the best-selling series by Cassandra Clare, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES is a magnificent urban fantasy rich in detail and suspense, about a girl’s journey to the darkest corners of the underworld to save those she loves.

It also looks as if The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones will in fact be shot in 3D, as director Scott Charles Stewart hinted at back in May.

Finally, we’ve got the official synopsis for the feature film adaptation of the popular teen book series The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The 3D film stars Lily Collins as a girl who is transported to another world when she meets a mysterious half-angel known as a Shadowhunter.

Good to see Sony Pictures and Screen Gems are finally getting started on production of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Could casting news soon follow in the coming weeks?

This synopsis is the first official one that was released. It is likely that there will be an edited one as the script hasn’t been turned into the studio yet. It will likely fluctuate throughout the production process.

I took a look at both the book and film synopses for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and there are a lot of similarities there. Go check it out.

  1. They can’t say half angel! It gives something away from book 2! D:

  2. “Transported” to another world.

Bad word choice, because then people would think that Jace actually transported her to another world. It still takes place in her own world, she just has a new perspective.

  3. Breathtaking synopsis. It stuffs everything special about the book in a few paragraphs. It’s also exciting because it’s one step closer to actual filming. Squeee!!!

  4. This just made me a happy camper times 2! Not only r they making one of the BK series I’ve read into a movie but now this BK series as well. 🙂 super happy n can’t wait to c both movies when they’re released 😀

    • I agree Briana. It’s horrible. I am glad that 3D movies are at least played in the theaters in 2D so I can go see them!

  5. I so despise 3D; It’s overused and crappy. And I don’t know about that “transports her across time and space in a heartbeat” either. It makes it seem like she’s going through a time portal and to another world or something. I pray they don’t ruin this move when the books were so awesome.

    • I would say the only movie where 3D was properly used and had a good affect on the audience was Avatar. Where people actually went to see the movie with 3D being one of the main reasons. The only one.

  6. Ugh I can’y stand the actor they picked for Jace 😦 What a let down

  7. “transports her across time and space in a heartbeat” I don’t like this part either, they need to word it differently and how come they didn’t mention JCB anywhere?

  8. they need to say who plays the main characters!

  9. I still dont see this actor as Jace, please let him be a good actor and let him be better looking for the movie. The guy from I am number 4 is a better fit!

    • Alex Pettyfer didnt take it. Jamie is a brilliant actor, and Cassie said she thinks he’s perfect after watching his audition. Hes got the attitude and character to play Jace.

    • I know! Me either! I think the guy playing Cato in “The Hunger Games” would be a PERFECT Jace!!

  10. I think the synopsis is WAY off. It has bits and pieces right, but if someone didn’t read the book this seems completely different from the book. I certainly hope that they do this right. I hate it when I love a book and see the movie and the movie is HORRIBLE. This description seems a bit cheesey if you ask me, they make is sound as if Jace takes her to a different world (not New York City). Someone else said it above, it’s still THIS world, she just has a new found perspective.

I am keeping my fingers cross that they don’t slaughter this movie.

    • I don`t meant to be a pessimist but they probably will, I love the book series. But the synonpsis sounds crappy “After a whirling golden portal transports her across time and space in a heartbeat??” WTH? in my opinion they should stick to the whole book layout.

  11. Give Jamie a chance, he’s a good actor! Alex Pettifer (sp) DID NOT WANT this role, the topic is dead people, time to let it go.

  12. I’m happy to have this, but it is REALLY badly worded. Half-angel? Time and Space? Transported? I’m not sure the person who wrote this has read the books. I know the movie is going to be different then the book, but still. The words used give this the wrong connotation, like she’s going to an entirely different world that has nothing to do with ours.

  13. does anyone know if they are trying to fit all 3 books in 1 movie? Because that is not going to work…I kinda have a feeling they are going to end up slaughtering this movie…please dont let us down!!

  14. no mention of Simon… hmmm…

ME NOT SEEING THIS MOVIE IF SIMON’S NOT IN IT!

    • IKR! I mean, where the heck is Simon?? I totally agree with you!

      • Apparently the original script left out some characters, like Magnus aswell! Dont see how they could do it without the awesomeness that is Magnus! So glad they decided to rewrite the script so its closer to the books! None of the characters can really be left out without having to change major parts of the story

  15. “after a whirling golden portal transport her through space and time…”
What the hell is that all about? This synopsis sucks. Especially for a hard core shadowhunter. *sigh* As long as they stick to the facts in the movie…

  16. ok I read through the the summary again and yes, it sucks. it’s too long and it’s all over the place. what is “after a whirling golden portal transport her through space and time…” about? it’s a completely on the book.

P.S. Alex pettyfer didn’t want the role and Jamie did. get over it.

  17. sorry I meant *completely different book*

  18. so are they just throwing away Simon’s character???

  19. All i can say is…..PLEASE don’t screw this up!!!! I know the movie will be different than the books, but the interconnecting relationships are why I love this series!!!! I would hate this to end up like Eragon and the Dark is Rising adaptations. They sucked because they changed TOO much and threw everything out of whack. I just hope this doesn’t go that way.

  20. I like it so far but will there be humor In this like the book, I hope they don’t make jace all dark like Edward from twilight:)

  21. @ash; no, they’re not throwing away simon’s character, they just forgot to mention hiim. I don’t know how that happend

  22. I can’t say that I fully like the idea of turning one of my favourite books into a movie, or even into a 3-D movie. HOPEFULLY, it won’t be one of those movie adaptations that are crap compared to the movie. I find that when a movie is done bad, in comparison to the book, it ruins it for me. Please Cassandra, make sure that the movie is more than decent. All the best with filming!

  23. What is this I don’t even

  24. Anything turned into 3D always turns out badly in 2D or just in general. Half the time the scenes they make that are suppose to come off the screen are way to OVER done and come off really cheesy or weird on a regular screen. I’ve seen that as more of a problem with horror movies and very intense action movies, so this whole 3D thing could ruin the movie.

Plus hollywood has taken so many book’s from the YA world and kind of not really kept true to it’s story roots except for “Harry Potter”. That is the only book series that hasn’t failed. But everything was pretty much in 2D.

*sigh* I’ve got a gut feeling they won’t get this right… but I’m putting my money on “The Hunger Games” as that movie will live up to the hype…

  25. no 3D!!!!!:(

I feel that the synopsis is giving away too much info. I LOVE the books but i’m always skeptical when they make a movie out of a book… I was hoping for Alex Pettyfer playing Jace but i’ll keep faith that Jamie will do well since Cassie thinks he’s perfect. I’m really hoping it doesn’t let me down. :/

  27. Cassie said something about the synopsis will change as the script will be giving to the studio- and when that will happen the synopsis will change, because its easier to make a synopsis from a done script- i think this a just a little “plot” sort of speak- so its just about patience, because its said that Marlene King will be done maybe around next week, lets just hope…
Because i know this synopsis sucks, so just think of it as a little taste about how close the movie will be to the book 🙂

  28. Where is Magnus? And Alec? There is just Jace and Clary! I don;t like it… ;(

  29. Why does every movie they do now in 3D. I tired of 3D movies. I hope the director does not screw up this movie. Hopefully it will be in 2D as well.

  30. I feel like it gives away to much information…
“Cast out from the world of Shadowhunters, Valentine abducted Jocelyn believing she had a powerful tool known as the Mortal Cup. Using her newfound gifts, Clary finds the Cup, only to be brutally betrayed and forced to relinquish it.”

  31. I think they revealed a little too much. They practically went through the whole story. I kept finding myself surprised by how much they were saying. Anyway, it still looks amazing! …except for the 3D! What is the point, honestly? 3D’s pretty much just stupid. Zatheyll had it right, Avatar is the only movie I really liked with 3D. That said, I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!! (Though, not to be a pessimist, they’ll probably ruin it in comparison to the book.)

  32. As excited as I am the 3D dims that a bit. (Well, not much..but a bit) I can’t watch 3D movies..they make me VERY ill. I’m sure it’ll play in 2D though. Cannot wait!

  33. Wow it’s very different from the book plot but I’m interested in seeing how it turns out…

  34. I think the synopsis tells a BIT too much of the book….but yeah..it is different :/
yay (: 3D movies 🙂 I hope they make it like those nice ones. the ones that are actually worth paying for 3D :/

  35. You can’t say “transported” Because she is still in New York. She just starts seeing things that Shadow hunters can see.

  36. It’s really a great and helpful piece of info. I’m glad that you just shared this useful info with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.

  37. Terrible choice to play Jace. Has anyone even seen him in Arthur?? Horrid. I’m tremendously disappointed. The book are absolutely amazing, but now they’ll be ruined by the quick rush to make them into movies and terrible lead male actors.

  38. Why jamie campbell bower as jace? 😦 alex pettyfer would be SOOO much better 🙂

    • Alex Pettyfer didnt want the role. Honestly, Jamie is such a better actor anyway. You can’t get much higher praise than the author of the books saying you were perfect for a role, and Cassie has said that about Jamie.
