MARCH 1, 2011 Lily Collins did what no other actor/actress had done before for a role: set-up a Twitter account for her character. Collins (@LilyAsClaryFray) connected with fans, as well as gathered ideas for the movie. Just in case there was any question that it wasn't Collins, she spoke with MTV to confirm that is indeed her. The account has been inactive since June, when Jamie Campbell Bower was cast as Jace, surely due to Collins' busy schedule. The 'Dirty Sexy Alley Scene,' as deemed by Cassandra Clare, was produced by VLC Productions when she was shooting the book trailer for City of Fallen Angels. We got our first look at some of the production going into The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie with renderings of the vampire bikes. Lily Collins shared some initial sketches that the studio shared with her before the Mortal Instruments Examiner shared some altered images. It still hold a gothic edge but it more resembles a motorcycle.

Cassandra Clare shared some pretty exciting news earlier in the year when she revealed that she was planning another Shadowhunter series that would precede The Mortal Instruments. The series, titled The Dark Artifices, would take place five years following City of Heavenly Fire, the final installment of The Mortal Instruments, and concern the Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles Institute. The two protagonists are Emma and Julian, who are both Shadowhunters and have known they “both have always known they are Shadowhunters.” More Shadowhunter books from Cassie? It took six months but Screen Gems found its Jace Wayland in British actor Jamie Campbell Bower on May 31. The inital reception wasn’t as warm as one might want it to be but after Cassandra Clare said that she was brought to tears watching Bower and Lily Collins (Clary Fray) interact during their screen test. “…That was my Jace and Clary,” she said.

One day following the announced casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland, Cassandra Clare talked with Hollywood Crush about Bower’s audition and the chemistry between Lily Collins and Bower that “blazed off the scene.” Clare was able to reassure some fans that weren’t initially receptive to the idea of Bower as Jace, and she also divulged details from the audition. One of the scenes that Collins and Bower read was the infamous greenhouse scene. “I’m watching the audition and I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen,” Clare said.

Clare revealed that it was indeed something that fans have been begging her for, and they certainly earned it by getting Jace to the finals (and eventually the win!)

After nearly 50,000 votes cast, the winner of the YA Crush Tournament was none other than Mortal Instrument‘s Jace Wayland. Jace, who was the No. 2 seed in the tournament, garnered 24,204 votes, as well as a lot of support from his creator Cassandra Clare and her fans, to win the inaugural finale of the tournament. Jace defeated Zachary from Shade and Shift by nearly 3,000 votes.

After Cassandra Clare described the audition with Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower in an interview with Hollywood Crush, fans were desperate to know more–better yet, where is this footage? (locked up at Sony Pictures, I’m sure.) But Collins shared some details about Bower’s audition, including that she knew Jamie was Jace from the start. “The second he started playing with the scene with me, everything was just so natural,” Lily continued. “He didn’t even seem like he was trying. He was just Jace.”

For the first time since being cast as Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the City of Bones movie, Jamie Campbell Bower talked all things Mortal Instruments with Hollywood Crush, including his audition. Bower revealed, as Cassandra Clare had said earlier, that he prepared quite extensively for the audition in finding out every detail he could about the character. He is very humbled to have been given the opportunity to take on the role and is really looking forward to the stunt work when filming begins.

After Jamie Campbell Bower was cast as Jace in late May, there was a lull in Mortal Instruments movie news. We eventually found out just why. Marlene King, who is the mastermind behind the Pretty Little Liars TV series, was penned to rewrite to original screenplay written by Jessica Postigo. Cassandra Clare revealed in December that the studio wanted the script to be closer to the book. “She (The head of Sony Pictures) didn’t feel like it stuck close enough to the book,” Clare told The FAB Life in December. “I kind of agreed with her. There were some characters that were taken out and things that were switched around, and it was very different from City of Bones.”

The first movie news to come from Screen Gems, since the announced casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace, was the release of the first official synopsis of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones at the American Film Market in November. There was a lot of mixed reaction, but it is nothing to worry too much about. The synopsis is just the first draft and it shows that Screen Gems is moving forward with the project. Like the script it will undergo many changes.

She estimated that the film could see a Spring/Summer 2013 release date.

Yes, the infamous Dirty Sexy Balcony Scene was released in its entirety after a week-long blog treasure hunt that included several fan sites, including TMI Source. VLC Productions produced the scene that clocked in at just under two minutes.

There is a great emphasis on the progress of the Mortal Instruments film adaptation that it’s kind of easy to forget that Screen Gems optioned both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Cassandra Clare revealed in an interview with The FAB Life that they have a screenwriter for The Infernal Devices. She also revealed that they’ve been thinking about releasing the films in book publication order. “We’ve only gotten as far as the screenwriter,” she said. “They’re very enthusiastic about it. They were like, ‘What would you feel if we … released them the same way you released the books, alternating?’ I was like, ‘If you think that will work … you know about movies and I don’t!’ That would be really interesting. I don’t know if they would do one in the spring and one in the fall or what.” Interesting, indeed!
