Cassandra Clare shared some pretty exciting news earlier in the year when she revealed that she was planning another Shadowhunter series that would precede The Mortal Instruments. The series, titled The Dark Artifices, would take place five years following City of Heavenly Fire, the final installment of The Mortal Instruments, and concern the Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles Institute. The two protagonists are Emma and Julian, who are both Shadowhunters and have known they “both have always known they are Shadowhunters.” More Shadowhunter books from Cassie? Let the emotional trauma continue!

It took six months but Screen Gems found its Jace Wayland in British actor Jamie Campbell Bower on May 31. The inital reception wasn’t as warm as one might want it to be but after Cassandra Clare said that she was brought to tears watching Bower and Lily Collins (Clary Fray) interact during their screen test. “…That was my Jace and Clary,” she said.
JUNE 1, 2011
One day following the announced casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland, Cassandra Clare talked with Hollywood Crush about Bower’s audition and the chemistry between Lily Collins and Bower that “blazed off the scene.” Clare was able to reassure some fans that weren’t initially receptive to the idea of Bower as Jace, and she also divulged details from the audition. One of the scenes that Collins and Bower read was the infamous greenhouse scene. “I’m watching the audition and I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen,” Clare said.

As a special treat for reaching 40,000 followers on Twitter, Cassandra Clare shared “Loss,” which is the holy water scene from Clockwork Angel in Will’s POV. We get a look into Will’s mind as he struggles to deal with the demons of his past and his present feelings for Tessa in this steamy scene in Victorian England.

As a reward for Jace advancing to the finals in YA Sisterhood’s ‘YA Crush Tournament,’ Cassandra Clare shared the ‘Spicy Manor House Scene,’ also known as the hot and heavy scene in City of Glass in Jace’s POV. Clare revealed that it was indeed something that fans have been begging her for, and they certainly earned it by getting Jace to the finals (and eventually the win!)
AUGUST 10, 2011
After nearly 50,000 votes cast, the winner of the YA Crush Tournament was none other than Mortal Instrument‘s Jace Wayland. Jace, who was the No. 2 seed in the tournament, garnered 24,204 votes, as well as a lot of support from his creator Cassandra Clare and her fans, to win the inaugural finale of the tournament. Jace defeated Zachary from Shade and Shift by nearly 3,000 votes.
AUGUST 11, 2011
In honor of Jace winning YA Sisterhood’s ‘YA Crush Tournament,’ Cassandra Clare shared the mother of all teasers regarding City of Lost Souls: the unedited, that’s right, unedited version of the ‘Dirty Sexy Club Scene.’ Clare revealed that there will be a “cleaner” version of this scene in City of Lost Souls, which hits bookshelves on May 8, 2012.
AUGUST 16, 2011
The Cassandra Clare fandom is all powerful and a dedicated bunch, at that. A few fans got to talking about perhaps hosting a Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices convention in the future, in New York City and perhaps in conjunction with the release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones or the final book in The Mortal Instruments, City of Heavenly Fire. Clare was all for it. As are we and the thousands of other fans.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2011
After Cassandra Clare described the audition with Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower in an interview with Hollywood Crush, fans were desperate to know more–better yet, where is this footage? (locked up at Sony Pictures, I’m sure.) But Collins shared some details about Bower’s audition, including that she knew Jamie was Jace from the start. “The second he started playing with the scene with me, everything was just so natural,” Lily continued. “He didn’t even seem like he was trying. He was just Jace.”
SEPTEMBER 19, 2011
For the first time since being cast as Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the City of Bones movie, Jamie Campbell Bower talked all things Mortal Instruments with Hollywood Crush, including his audition. Bower revealed, as Cassandra Clare had said earlier, that he prepared quite extensively for the audition in finding out every detail he could about the character. He is very humbled to have been given the opportunity to take on the role and is really looking forward to the stunt work when filming begins.
SEPTEMBER 19, 2011
Jamie Campbell Bower posted an innocent enough message on Twitter back in June, but it quickly blew up around the Mortal Instruments fandom. Bower shared that he would be getting a Mortal Instruments tattoo to commemorate the role of Jace, as he does with all of his roles. A couple of weeks later, Bower divulged to Hollywood Crush that he was still deciding on the tattoo. Rune? Or quote? So when will Bower get the tattoo? Trust me, when it happens, you will know.
SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
After Jamie Campbell Bower was cast as Jace in late May, there was a lull in Mortal Instruments movie news. We eventually found out just why. Marlene King, who is the mastermind behind the Pretty Little Liars TV series, was penned to rewrite to original screenplay written by Jessica Postigo. Cassandra Clare revealed in December that the studio wanted the script to be closer to the book. “She (The head of Sony Pictures) didn’t feel like it stuck close enough to the book,” Clare told The FAB Life in December. “I kind of agreed with her. There were some characters that were taken out and things that were switched around, and it was very different from City of Bones.”
OCTOBER 14, 2011
Cassandra Clare announced some exciting news concerning The Infernal Devices. The bestselling series will join The Mortal Instruments in its translation to graphic novel. Yen Press will adapt Infernal Devices to manga, with the first issue (Clockwork Angel) to be released in December 2012.
NOVEMBER 4, 2011
The first movie news to come from Screen Gems, since the announced casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace, was the release of the first official synopsis of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones at the American Film Market in November. There was a lot of mixed reaction, but it is nothing to worry too much about. The synopsis is just the first draft and it shows that Screen Gems is moving forward with the project. Like the script it will undergo many changes.
DECEMBER 6, 2011
The highly-anticipated second installment of The Inferal Devices series continued the adventures of Tessa Gray, Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs and the gang in Victorian London. The love triangle heated up and fans chose sides (Team Will, Team Jem, Team Tessa) in what Cassandra Clare called her “most well-reviewed book.” Fans are left dealing with the emotional trauma while they wait for the release of Clockwork Princess in winter 2012.
DECEMBER 6, 2011
After thousands upon thousands of votes, bestselling author Cassandra Clare was named ‘Best Goodreads Author’ of 2011 in the Goodreads Choice Awards. Clare had two bestselling novels in 2011, City of Fallen Angels in April and Clockwork Prince in December. Her fan following is one of the biggest forces online. So it should come as no surprise that Cassie came out on top.
DECEMBER 8, 2011
Just two days after the release of Clockwork Prince, author Cassandra Clare dished on all things Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments, including what lies ahead in both series. Clare talked the infamous Tessa-Will-Jem love triangle, as well as revealed that we will find out where Tessa comes from. She also said there are more hints, like the J.G. initials, connecting both series in future books, which are always fun.
DECEMBER 12, 2011
There are more questions than answers when it comes to the film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which is being overseen by Sony Pictures and Screen Gems. But fans finally got some real news when Cassandra Clare shared in an interview with The FAB Life that Screen Gems was aiming for an early spring 2012 filming start for the film. She estimated that the film could see a Spring/Summer 2013 release date.
DECEMBER 13, 2011
It started with the Clockwork Prince teaser trailer and then quickly morphed into a full-fledged scene. Yes, the infamous Dirty Sexy Balcony Scene was released in its entirety after a week-long blog treasure hunt that included several fan sites, including TMI Source. VLC Productions produced the scene that clocked in at just under two minutes.
DECEMBER 13, 2011
There is a great emphasis on the progress of the Mortal Instruments film adaptation that it’s kind of easy to forget that Screen Gems optioned both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Cassandra Clare revealed in an interview with The FAB Life that they have a screenwriter for The Infernal Devices. She also revealed that they’ve been thinking about releasing the films in book publication order. “We’ve only gotten as far as the screenwriter,” she said. “They’re very enthusiastic about it. They were like, ‘What would you feel if we … released them the same way you released the books, alternating?’ I was like, ‘If you think that will work … you know about movies and I don’t!’ That would be really interesting. I don’t know if they would do one in the spring and one in the fall or what.” Interesting, indeed!
