Confirmed: Sony/Screen Gems to distribute ‘City of Bones’ + more movie stuff

After ScreenRant reported on Tuesday that Sony scheduled an August 23, 2013, release for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie, we now how confirmation from Cassandra Clare herself, along with IndieWire.

It looks like Sony/Screen Gems will indeed get a second chance with The Mortal Instruments, after passing on it back in February.

Here’s what the article from IndieWire had to say:

Given the wealth of material Clare has provided, it seemed strange that Sony and their genre arm Screen Gemsdecided to pass on “Mortal Instruments” in February, even if it was only for a fleeting moment. Screen Gems has proven with the “Underworld” and “Resident Evil” franchises that it knows how to milk a concept for multiple installments, and yet here was a stack of books just waiting to be turned into a film franchise. Constantin Film, who worked with Screen Gems on the “Resident Evil” movies, never gave up, and officially mended fences last week when they closed the deal to partner on the adaptation of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” With the film financed, the studio has already scheduled a release date of August 23, 2013 — a weekend which currently has no other releases scheduled. That gives new director Harald Zwart a little over a year and four months to cast, prep, shoot and edit “The Mortal Instruments.”

Something else that should catch the fandom’s eye:

With only Collins set to appear thus far, expect casting notices for “The Mortal Instruments” to drop soon. Jamie Campbell Bower was set to play Clary’s love interest and fellow Shadowhunter Jace, but is no longer attached.

While the article points out that Bower is no longer attached, Clare revealed that the studio is currently negotiating his contract. So Jamie is still Jace unless something goes horribly wrong in negotiations.

Here’s what Clare had to say:

There’s a bunch in here to digest, so have fun with it. The main thing that is confirmed truth here is that Sony/Screen Gems is distributing The Mortal Instruments movie, and the release date is set for August 23, 2013. I’ve seen people say “That’s so far off!” but as the article says “That gives new director Harald Zwart a little over a year and four months to cast, prep, shoot and edit “The Mortal Instruments.” It really isn’t that much time — at all!

“Expect casting notices for “The Mortal Instruments” to drop soon” is I imagine what everyone will instantly fixate on. 😀 As for the part about Jamie, what I know is that they’re in negotations about his contract. That’s it, that’s all I know. You can ask me till you’re blue like a Smurf and I won’t know more. 🙂

[And if you’re excited about the movie, tell them in the comments! It makes the movie people happy and happy movie people work faster. :D)] And be happy. You’ve been waiting ages and things are happening and that is good.

City of Bones will begin filming on August 15 in Toronto and New York City.

There is a lot to be done over the next year and four months before City of Bones hits theaters, and it’s sure going to be a fun ride.

What are you looking forward to next? Does Mortal Instruments have what it takes to be Hollywood’s next superfranchise?

  1. I would love Alex Pettyfer to play the role of Jace. He’s who I’ve pictured since I fell in love with the series.

    • I dislike Alex his a bad actor, you love him & I can respect that, but he still a bad actor but then again Jamie is no better but aleast I can tolerate him better 🙂

  2. I’m happy! I’m so excited! I hope to not be let down 😉 I also hope they are able to accomplish everything WELL over the next year and four months because, really, that is barely any time!

  3. Wait! Are you guys saying that Jamie doesn’t want to be Jace anymore?? I’d love Alex Pettyfer to be Jace! Or Even Benjamin Stone from Nine Lives of Chloe King!!

    • There are rumors floating around that Jamie isn’t attached to the project, but Cassie cleared those up. They are currently negotiating his contract. He’s still Jace.

  4. This is AWESOME news!! I am so excited for this movie, and actually the release date is a lot sooner than normally expected for a movie. So YAY! I understand that Jamie is still negotiating the contract, but I do hope other options are considered. Either way, HELL YEAH! 😀

I hope and pray that Jamie is still going to be Jace. He’s been my favourite choice right from the beginning. Please, please let it work out with him. I’ll be devastated if it goes to someone else. He’s so keen on playing Jace and had chemistry with Lily, I can’t understand why it’s all looking so shaky now?

  8. cant wait picked the 1st of the books up 2 weeks ago and have now read all 5 and now onto the clockwork angel and soon clockwork prince….. telling everyone of my friends that reads to get this book and read, and bring on the move ASAP please…
