Cannes: eOne acquires deal for ‘Mortal Instruments’

‘The Mortal Instruments’ has been selling out Cannes prior to the start of the festival last week.

After selling to Australia (Roadshow), Italy (Eagle), Scandanavia (Svensk), South Korea (Bloomage), Hong Kong (Lark/UA Films), Latin America (Sun Distribution) and Eastern Europe (Media Pro) among other territories, eOne has locked a  multi-territory deal for ‘Mortal Instruments,’ according to Variety:

David Garrett and Constantin’s joint new sales operation Mister Smith has locked a multi-territory deal with eOne for U.K., Canada and Benelux on supernatural adventure “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”

Pic, a Constantin production based on the bestselling tomes by Cassandra Clare, has now virtually sold out by the halfway point of the Cannes market and less than three weeks since Mister Smith was launched.

The robust sales of the title are a boon for Mister Smith in an otherwise cautious market thus far.

Garrett’s respected history in the international sales arena pared with Constantin’s production muscle has seen “Mortal Instruments,” a particular project with franchise potential, click with distribs.

Property is based on a series of best-selling books, therefore already a literary franchise, and has a strong domestic deal in place with Sony, which is releasing the pic on August 23, 2013.

Pic is helmed by Harald Zwart and toplines Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower and follows the story of a young girl in Gotham who, in a quest to find her kidnapped mother, finds out truths about her past and bloodline that changes her entire life.

This is great news for ‘Mortal Instruments’ and Mister Smith Entertainment.
