Casting Talk: Cassandra Clare talks casting adult roles in ‘City of Bones’

We at the point in pre-production where filming is less than two months away and casting is the hot topic.

Last week, Jemima West was cast as Isabelle joining Lily Collins (Clary) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace), who where previously cast.

We also learned that Alec had been cast, but his identity will remain a secret for now because of said actor’s schedule.

Cassandra Clare also said that Simon wouldn’t be cast until July most likely. She also said that there’s a Magnus that the studio has agreed on but they have to officially make an offer.

So much emphasis has been on the “kids” lately, so what about the adults?

Clare took to Tumblr to address the question:

For the adult roles, people don’t so much audition. When you’re a younger actor, you tend to have less of a body of work, whereas if you’re asking, like, Dame Judi Dench (I pick her randomly because there is obviously not a role for her in the movie so no one will think I am giving oblique hints!) she has a huge body of work you can look over to see the vast range of roles she can play. So it is very unlikely anyone would ever ask her to audition. It tends to be much more a “chat with the director over lunch or Skype to make sure you’re simpatico, that’s it” kind of thing. So it’s just not a question of like the hundreds and hundreds of auditions that came in for Jace and Alec and Izzy. (As for Lily and Jamie auditioning together, the moviemakers are aware that the chemistry between Jace and Clary has to be a centerpoint of the film, so that was nonnegotiable, but testing together doesn’t always happen.)

With the adults there is a definite “well, if this person then this person but not this person” thing — like, Luke and Valentine have to be very different. It’s all very complicated with lots of moving parts. These days I tend to be amazed that any movies ever get made at all.

Who are some of your favorite actors for the roles of Valentine, Jocelyn, Luke and Hodge? Do you think any big names will be involved in the film? Sound off in the comments!

  1. Honestly, I don’t really particularly care about most of the adult roles. As long as they have someone really good for Valentine, Camille, and Luke, and someone at least decent for everyone else, I’m fine with whoever they pick.

I think Julianne Moore would actually make a good Jocelyn but I think that will happen :/

  3. I don’t think any big names will sign up as the series isn’t very popular or well-known. (Cassie’s fantasy casting list had me LOL-ing because it truly was a fantasy! :-D). I just want them to get talented character actors who can bring some additonal dimension and believability to the rather thankless roles of the adult characters.

Robert Downey Jr. for Valentine. Omg that would be amazing. *cries because will never happen*

  5. i think hugh laurie would make a great hodge.

  6. I see Michael Fassebuero ( can’t spell his name) is very popular amongst the Valentine lovers, as for Luke almost everyone wants Gerard Butler for Hodge, Hugh Laurie is a great choice Jocelyn Christine Hendrick.

i wish my mom were an actress she looks a little like an older version of clary and she is the one who said ‘ cathy stop reading harry potter and warriors again and again. i read these books and you will read and love them. maximum ride and the mortal instruments.’ but not alot of actors that are adults read mi. but i think gary oldman(?) should be hodge
    and misha collins for luke

    • I love TMI. I love Harry Potter. I love Maximum Ride (Fang is an idiot, but I love him anyway). What is Warriors?

  8. Micheal Fassebuero (don’t know how to to spell) But the guy who is Magneto in X-Men: First Class as VAlentine!!

    • Girl, I thought no one could be a kick butt Magneto other than Sir Ian boy was I wrong, Michael would be the perfect Valentine, my fantasy Luke is Hugh Jackman but since that is the real fantasy Eric Bana would be awesome, he was very Luke like in Troy. I still like Christine Hendrick for Jocelyn and saying the adults are not important when they are the ones who form the Circle and the whole mess with the Clave really have the walnut the size of a brain,

  9. valentine – michael fassbender, jason isaacs, viggo morgenstern or paul bettany (cute since lily has already worked with him)
jocelyn – julianne moore (would love but she’s too old), laura leighton (again, slightly old unless they make all the adults older and enlarge time since the circle’s uprising) or kate beckinsale (with red hair would be great since she plays a warrior type part in underworld)
luke – gerard butler, henry cavill (bit young) or eric bana
hodge – hugh laurie, anthony stewart head or gary oldman

i think jessica chastian would be a great jocelyn. she can act and she has the looks . a good luke would be hugh jackman(maybe robert downery jr) among others and valentine would be robert downey junior, daneil craig, maybe gary oldman

  11. Jocelyn – totally Julianne Moore, I can just see her.
Valentine – Daniel Craig all the way! He has that sinister look about him that just screams Valentine!
Luke – I always have pictured Gerard Butler. He reminds me of Luke. I think he could be quiet and booky and rugged and muscular all at the same time!
Hodge – he’s much harder. I can sorda see Robert Downey Jr, but that might be stretching it…. so I don’t know about that one. He’s not my ideal choice.
But yes. PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS ONE! 😦

  12. Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the pictures on this
blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
