Movie Monday #11: Java Jones

We are just over a year away from the theatrical release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ and the hype for the adaptation of the internationally best selling series by Cassandra Clare will only continue to grow as the release draws nearer.

I’ve banded together with other ‘Mortal Instruments’ fansites (TMI Institute, Mundie Moms, TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol) for a new weekly feature called Movie Monday.

Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

Week 11: JAVA JONES

Alyssa, TMI Source: Java Jones and the moments that succeed it are integral in the plot of City of Bones. It’s the first time the audience will see that Simon is in love with Clary and it leads up to Clary and Jace’s meeting outside and Jocelyn’s frantic call to Clary.

Fans are eager to see if Eric’s poetry will make the cut. Cassandra Clare revealed that Eric (and the rest of Simon’s band) are in the movie. Eric has some dialogue while the others will just stand in the background, but it looks like we could get a taste of Eric’s poetry (“loins”).

Now there are other ways to transition between Clary and Jace’s meeting outside Pandemonium and where Clary gets the phone call from Jocelyn. Will it be close to the scene in the book? I can’t say for sure because things are ever-changing in Hollywood adaptations. But I could definitely see Java Jones in the movie (with the same name or a different one).

Amber, TMI Institute: The “Shadowhunter” chapter sheds more light on the mysterious world of nephilim and downworlders, mostly happening at (or outside) the coffee house Java Jones. I feel this scene must be in the movie for a number of reasons.

The backdrop of this part of the book takes place as Simon and Clary go to see Eric do a hideous poetry session at Java Jones. I’m dying to see Simon (Robert Sheehan) looking antsy as he tries to tell Clary (Lily Collins) how much he wants her to be his girlfriend and how oblivious Clary is to this fact. I can’t wait for that moment when she notices Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) sitting there in the shop, hidden from everyone but her, and how she abruptly runs out after him when he goes outside.

The interaction between them outside Java Jones is just as necessary. Jace tries to find out what she is. Clary is confused and annoyed at his inherent babbling about Shadowhunters but interested enough to stay and talk. “Declarations of love amuse me, especially when unrequited” is one of my favorite lines by Jace. He realizes how much Simon, the most mundane of mundanes, likes Clary even though she clearly doesn’t feel the same. This is just another revelation he is trying to share with Clary. It’s a way to open her eyes to all the truths she seems to miss in her life.

I’m equally just as excited to see when Clary opens her mind up enough to see Jace’s runes, thus confirming his suspicions about her. This leads to an unexpected set of calls from her mom (Jocelyn is portrayed by Lena Headey), where Clary realizes she is in danger. Jace tries to help, but Clary lashes out at him, scraping her nails along his face. She runs off into the night to save her mom. This scene will be a great transition to the attack on Clary by the Ravener demon.

Natalie, TMI Examiner: Java Jones is an important scene because next to the Pandemonium Club it serves as a great transition from the “mundane” world to the new world Clary is about to learn.

I can’t wait for that moment when Clary sees Jace but realizes that only she can see him. I also believe that though not the focus, Robert Sheehan will show us some great Simon acting in this scene when he’s trying to talk to the distracted Clary.

This scene perfectly sets up the phone call from Jocelyn and Clary’s race to save her. It continues to move the story along and takes us further into the world. Can’t wait to see it!

Tita, TMI News en Español:The scene in Java Jones at the begining of chapter 3 it’s very funny and interesting, and I really think it should be in the movie but I’m realistic and I think that if they modify it a little it won’t affect the movie development, as long as they do not forget to add the important stuff of the scene in it. Clary goes to this bar because she gets angry with her mom and we need her to go outside her house… We’ll meet Eric and his bad poetry which will make laugh to all the audience. Also, Simon and Clary’s talk it’s quite funny, and in this situation you can find out what are Simon’s feelings for Clary. We are also able to meet Jace for second time and see that what happened in the Pandemonium Club wasn’t a dream. The scene that happens just outside the Java Jones is the one that introduce us to what will happen in the next 2 books with Jocelyn’s disappearance. Fans will swoon with snarky Jace in this scene!
