Cassandra Clare addresses hate blogs, takes stand against bullying

Cassandra Clare is one of the thousands of people who have been the victim of cyberbullying.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and several blogs, including myselfMundie Moms TMI Institute and TMI News en espanolhave touched on the issue of bullying.

Cassie wrote a fantastic and very brave post where she addressed those hate blogs and cyberbullying. It is such an inspiring post and I encourage everyone to read it.

Here’s an excerpt:

I just want you to know — and I say this, knowing how thrilled it will make the hate bloggers to hear this, but I am saying it anyway because you need to know it — of course, this stuff hurts me too.

These sort of attacks are so shocking/upsetting because they break the social contract we have come to expect decent people to adhere to: that people don’t attack your personal relationships, that they don’t sneer not just at your friends but at the idea that you might have friends, that they don’t attack the way you look or your family or your ethnicity/religion. The thing is, to the hate bloggers, and to the kind of people who send anonymous hateful messages, the object of their hate isn’t a person. To them, I am not a human being. My family are not real people. They have spent a great deal of time trying to convince themselves and others that my friends are not my friends. That Maureen Johnson and Scott Westerfeld and Libba Bray and Sarah Rees Brennan, who came to my wedding, hate me. That Holly Black, who was my bridesmaid, hates me. That John Green, who I also have known for years and who, when my first book hit the New York Times Bestseller list, gave me a hug and said: “That’s how you show haters,” not only “is only polite to me at conventions because he has to be”, but would applaud one of their hate blogs, a blog that calls me “greedy little bitch” and urges people to burn my books. There is a lot of contention that my friends, specifically Maureen and Holly and Sarah, “have hitched their wagon to [me], most likely in hopes of more sales/exposure.” The problem with that is that I’ve known all those people since before I was published. When I met Holly, I was broke, and could not afford sheets, and she was a bestselling author with a movie coming out. To have befriended me in the hopes of PROFIT would make her … PSYCHIC. Also Sarah, who I met at a New Year’s Eve party in 2002, when she was nineteen, and neither of us were professional writers or even planning to be professional writers, apparently can see the future. As for Maureen, I met her before City of Bones ever came out, in Scott Westerfeld’s apartment at a party. How any of these people knew I would ever be a bestseller years before I had a book out is, I guess, one of those mysteries for the ages. (Also I should probably not have mentioned that I ever hugged John, since the hate bloggers likes to portray me as “overly handsy” with my guy friends and will probably find some entertaingly bezonkers way to spin that, but it boils down to calling me a slut, basically, which is pretty much the staple word in the vocabulary of gendered attack language.)

They believe my friends are my friends only because they don’t know “the truth about me.” Meanwhile, my friends (the ones they think aren’t really my friends) are exactly the people monitoring their hate blog to see if they start posting threats, or maps to my house, and keeping track of things like racially motivated insults, so that there is a record. Of course my friends know about them and everything they say about me. Who else do I have to go to about these things but my friends?

I highly encourage you to head over to Cassie’s Tumblr to read more

  1. I am so angry right now I could explode. Who the FUCK (excuse my language) gives them the right to do this? Who the hell do they think they are? This is disgusting and I hope they all receive what they dish out to other people. Cassie is on of the most amazing people ever. While reading her post I was Trying my best not to cry. I hate these people so much

  2. Of all the things in the world to be hating on; terrorism, bullying, et cetera, why in the world would someone zero in on Cassie Clare? Is their life so uncomplicated that they had to create a reason to bully a succesful author? That’s pretty weak.

  3. Well, they did say some stuff on that blog that Cassie was cyberbullying back (I think) Also, they listed a lot of plagiarism that she did

    • Cassie wasn’t cyber bullying back she was addressing the situation in which she was being attacked by haters and hate blogs. Of course the haters would say that. That was a very brave thing Cassie did posting about cyber bullying and what has been done to her.

I don’t condone what some fans have been doing–attacking the hate blog back–but what did the hate blog think was going to happen when they started attacking Cassie, who has a huge and supportive fan base?

      • And do we even know that the ‘hate messages’ these blogs recieve are actually real?
Anyone can send anon messages pretending to be a tmi fan and say hateful things.
I would not put it past those blogs to make up these ‘anonymous messages’.

    • I doubt they know what plagiarism is…….because if they did, they’d realise that she hasn’t stolen any material. How could she? You are allowed to qoute other people’s work. These cyberbully’s need to pick up a simple English textbook and learn a few things.

  4. I feel proud to be a fan of hers! With everything that’s going on in Ireland and England at the moment with cyberbullying suicide rates, it’s great to see someone credible speaking out against it all. I really don’t understand why people would target a talented writer…..of fiction. Her books aren’t filled with hatred and their not offensivly controversial. It’s laughable. Well, I guess she’ll be laughing all the way to the bank and the ‘haters; as American’s put it, can shout their abuse all they want. I mean, did Stephanie Meyer or Suzanne Collins have to put up with this crap?

susanne collins didnt plagerise for one. cassie clare copied heaps from the draco trilogy so basically harry potter itself and buffy the vampire slayer. She also coppied one of her co writers (pamela anderson) work and up to 200 pages of her mortal instruments series is stolen words and quotes.
Anyone that makes over $2,500 in profit from plagerism is to get a $250,000 fine at least and up to 10 yeas in jail. she has had niether.
NO those other authors havent had to put up with this “crap” but she deserves it.

      • Actually, to be pedantic about all of this, JK Rowling, and by association (they’re similar in several aspects) Suzanne Collins, did , in fact, plagiarize. You should read Enders Game, if you haven’t already, and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. No idea is entirely organic. How can it be? True originality is virtually impossible in this day and age. We follow formulas and we interpret other people’s thoughts and ideas and fit them into our own writings and musings. So, of course there are aspects of Clare’s writings that reflect Harry Potter. How could her writing NOT be influenced by some of the best science fiction ever written? However, that is not to degrade or destroy Clare’s work. It is fantastic in it’s own right. As you are mentioning the fines etc, for plagiarism, I’d just like to ask you to remember that nothing bad goes unpunished. Especially in a country as crazy about law as America. If Cassandra Clare had plagiarized, JK Rowling or the different plagiarism/copyright associations would have absolutely taken her to court. Considering the fact that none of that has happened…I think it’s fairly safe to say that the things that have been spread about her throughout the internet were nothing more than pure hatred and misinformation. Simple as. I hope other people are starting to understand that.

  5. I hate these blogs – they keep nitpicking at everything cassie writes and twisting it to try and make her sound like a bad person.
She is NOT a bad person.
The people who keep accusing her of plagiarism do not know the whole story, they hear ‘she stole bits from harry potter’ and then assume shes a plagiarist when in fact the full story proves she is not.
Whenever someone makes an extremely valid post proving Cassie’s innoncence – these blogs ignore it because they know the person who wrote it is right. Instead, they continue their pointless hate tirade. They arent acheiving anything, all they do is upset an author who has done nothing to deserve this.
If they enjoy that, then they must be extremely horrible people.

  6. Same thing happened to Stephenie Meyer, a money grabbing hooligan also accused Stephanie of stealing Twilight. Sadly Cassie had to deal with this also.

  7. i have found a hate blog on cassie and not only does she insult cassie, this chick insulted her seixten sister for liking the books (ok so many of us may have insulted peoople) but we all know it’s not polite o insult because they like something different than you. also authors are allowed to quote other’s people’s work and make references like one of the commenter said. but hate blogs what’s the point of them? if one person did a blog that talked about how they didn’t like her books after reading them, ok that sucks but that’s one thing. but these some of these blogs also insult her as a person

  8. Unknown's avatar teamedwardjace // October 13, 2012 at 5:26 PM // Reply

they also insulted her friends! and said some antisemetic comments! what the hell? I love Cassie and for her addressing this is another reason why she rocks

  9. What kind of stupid, mindless person would go out and start attacking such a wonderful author like Cassie Clare when they have no reason what so ever to? These haters obviously are clueless. They don’t need to be posting their rude opinions on the Internet when all of us super awesome fans of Cassandra Clare will be silently hating them for attacking our beloved author

  10. I know I’m not suppose to say this. I know I’m suppose to be unswervingly loyal to Cassandra Clare, because I own all her books I check her tumblr daily, and I eagerly await her new books.
But I have to say it anyway. I feel like there’s a giant elephant in the room that starts with the letter p. If you type “Cassandra Clare P” into google, the suggested text is not in fact Cassandra Clare Purple Hair, it’s Cassandra Clare Plagiarism. And that’s the main thing I’ve seen hate blogged. All the hate blogs I’ve read say horrible things, and center around accusations of plagiarism.
I’m a fan. I swear I am a fan, and if I were a shadowhunter I’d swear it on the angel and you could test me with the soul sword. I’ve read the plagiarism allegations in detail, and I don’t know where I stand. It mostly deals with fanfic, which I don’t take too seriously, since all fanfic seems to me to be a little bit of plagiarism, and who cares since they’re not profiting. But as a writer, and now published author plagiarism is a serious claim. Does Cassie dispute these allegations? Does she see it as a gray area (I kind of do)? Does she take ownership and admit she made a mistake and that it will never happen again?
I don’t know. And I was willing to let it slide. But now she seems to be addressing these hate blogs, and she leaves out what I think is a giant issue amongst the hate bloggers. Plagiarism. I’m sorry I had to say it. But I’m willing to listen and I wish I could hear her address it.

    • Read this post: http://witchisnotneutral.tumblr.com/post/32818536612/what-theclarewitchproject-doesnt-want-you-to-know

It basically calls out all of those plagiarism lies and sheds light on them as Cassie did no wrong. The very last people to trust on this topic are the hate blogs. Of course they’re going to spin it and throw in lies. That’s what they do.

      • I was reading from here which seemed pretty neutral: http://www.fanhistory.com/wiki/Cassandra_Claire
Anyway it didn’t convince me that she was in the wrong. It convinced me that it’s pretty much a gray area. I’d just like to hear from Cassandra about it.
And when it seemes like such a BIG issue amongst the hate bloggers, the fact that she doesn’t address it, to me anyway, comes off as avoiding the issue. I appreciate honesty and I wish I could hear her honest take on what happened.

    • I definitly get that you’re a fan…don’t worry!! ;L It’s worrying that she’s being accused of plagiarism…….BUT………I fail to see how it’s plagiarism. If someone had had the same idea that she did, that said person would have published it…..no? Besides, several authors including Becca Fitzpatrick and Darren Shan and Derek Landy have all said that ideas for stories are kind of like these things that float around in the sky and that you have to pull one down and write about it. This type of thing, where two authors may have somehting along the same ideas, happens all the time all across the world. I’m not sure what plagiarism laws are in writing in America…..I’m Irish and we have different laws regarding it. Could someone please clear it up? Because I keep saying that it’s not plagiarism, but if you have different laws then………..??? 🙂

  11. But thanks Alyssa, that link does help sort some things out.

    • You’re welcome.

If you read that post I linked to you’ll see it completely discredits fanhistory.com:

“Indeed, Laura Hale, one of the most famously crazy and unpleasant people ever to exist on the internet, registered all cassandraclaire related domain names before Cassandra Clare was published…Hale redirected all the sites in question to FHW, or the fanhistory wiki, a site she owns and runs and which has been repeatedly discredited. Almost everything posted on theclarewitchproject is copied verbatim from fanhistory.com or another Laura Hale site. Though I won’t link to anything as disgusting as fanhistory myself, a quick search of it can confirm everything here.

A little information on Laura Hale and fanhistory:

      http://wiki.fandomwank.com/index.php/Fanhistory_Wiki

“Discoveries of the Fanhistory Wiki tend to follow this pattern:

It’s a wiki about everything in fandom; how cool is that?
Wow; a lot of this stuff is wrong, and exactly the same information is copied into fifty different articles.
Wait, why aren’t more things cited?
      This is history?
      Okay, let’s edit!
      WTF? Banned?
Fanhistory has no notability requirements. It also has very few citation requirements.”

No one thinks Laura Hale or fanhistory are credible sources except theclarewitchproject. The fact that all their information comes from either anonymous asks or the website of a crazed racist, does in fact, say quite a bit about them.”

I can’t believe how insensitive and rude some people are. Cassie is an amazing writer, and I will never stop loving her and her stories!

  13. Personally, I don’t think that accusing someone of well documented plagiarism, in a fan work, is ‘cyber bullying’. CC may well be an amazing person, but I do not read any of her published works, do not plan to see the movies, and encourage my friends to avoid her as well, because Plagerism is WRONG. It doesn’t matter if it was in fanfiction, or not. Plagerism is Plagerism, and blatantly using whole paragraphs of an authors work without even properly citing the material, thereby passing it off as yours, is WRONG. Going back and changing your disclaimers doesn’t make it better. It’s still wrong. Using your fame to speak out against Cyber Bullying is amazing, and I applaud CC for that, but you can’t expect people not to speak the truth, especially when it’s as obvious as the DT was. I know I’ll be flamed for this, but it is what it is.

    • I don’t think you should be flamed for airing your opinion. But, in saying that….there’s been no documented proof that she has been involved in plagiarism. If there was, don’t you think that in modern America (the charm filled, wonderful place that it claims to be) she would have been slaughtered in a court hearing over it? It is an illegal act and considering that fact that she hasn’t been formally accused of anything….it’s all hearsay…..no? Although I respect that you obviously feel strongly about it. Rightfully so. It is a terrible thing, I just don’t believe, having read and studied the links available on the matter, that she did it.

  14. Hi! I could have sworn I’ve visited this site before but after browsing through some of the posts I realized it’s
new to me. Regardless, I’m definitely happy I came across it and I’ll be bookmarking it and checking back often!

  15. Wow that was odd. I just wrote an really long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.
Anyway, just wanted to say excellent blog!

  16. This post will help the internet viewers for setting
up new weblog or even a blog from start to end.

  17. Usually when scads of people bring up something about someone (Cassandra) in this case, there’s always some truth to it.

I’ll say this first: I’m not really a fan of Cassandra Clare. But that’s mostly because I’m not a fan of the genre, and I -completely- agree that cyberbullying is horrible. That said, it is rather discrediting to her point when overzealous fans of hers go crusading to write nasty things in the comments of the “hate blogs”. Whether what they’re saying is true or not, it does not mean it’s okay -in any scenario- to threaten them or ridicule them. That’s not okay at all. It’s bullying, plain and simple. I find it extremely discontenting that this sort of thing is so common on the internet.

And another thing: the things that C. Clare talks about in her post, the horrible things that people have apparently said about her–they’re completely uncalled for and hurtful. In any context, those are just horrible things to say. -But- I’ve seen some fans of Clare’s that attack others for not thinking that everything that Clare writes is JUST FANTASTIC (all-caps intended). Criticism is not bullying. I don’t know about Cassandra Clare, but I value criticism. It’s an essential part of learning and in my experience, it becomes extremely problematic when you think that a difference in opinion is a personal attack on you. And I’m about to start ranting about the importance of detaching yourself from your opinions so I’ll stop here.

  19. Hi, yes this post is actually good and I have learned lot of
things from it about blogging. thanks.

  20. I do believe all the ideas you have presented on your post.
They’re really convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are too quick for novices.
Could you please lengthen them a little from subsequent
    time? Thanks for the post.
