Cassandra Clare shares new CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE snippet

Cassandra Clare shared another City of Heavenly Fire snippet with her fans and the beginning should be familiar to everyone who has read City of Lost Souls (Chapter 19: Love And Blood):

Black for hunting through the night

For death and mourning the color’s white

Gold for a bride in her wedding gown

And red to call enchantment down.

White silk when our bodies burn,

Blue banners when the lost return.

Flame for the birth of a Nephilim,

And to wash away our sins.

Gray for knowledge best untold,

Bone for those who don’t grow old.

Saffron lights the victory march,

Green will mend our broken hearts.

Silver for the demon towers,

And bronze to summon wicked powers.

— Shadowhunter children’s rhyme

I like that every color represent something different; I especially love “White silk when our bodies burn,” although it’s a sad line. What do you think of this new snippet? Sound off in the comments!

  1. Wow – this is truly amazing. Cassie you are a genius!! I love this poem!! It’s awesome that all the colors are there and related to a very special meaning in the life of a shadowhunter. I’m trying to decide which line I like the best. It’s very hard as I love all of them!!!

I absolutely 100% agree . Okay , I’m going to he honest , when I made the comment about the Valentine teaser being the best bday present ever , but I was secretly wishing that it had been a CoHF snippet . That is so freaky !!! Okay , this is official the best bday present ever !!!! Thank you for sharing Cassie , and to Cat who posted the article !!! Seriously , I got CoB as a present (yeah , it’s sad , I had all but the first) and it , along with this article , was all I could have asked for !!! Thank you <333

  2. Wunderbar! Wonderful! Maravilloso!

  3. Perfection!

  4. First thought-beautiful.
    Second-when is this told/read?
Third-I hope we don’t get to see too many Nephilim in white silk as they burn.
Fourth-I’m definitely gonna be wearing green for a while to mend my broken heart after CoHF ends.

  5. This is so so so cool!

  6. My favorite color is green…so I love that green is the color for mending a broken heart.

  8. awesome! i love gold, i actually saw gold dress(and fairskinned people with paler look good in gold or silver) like me and lily. maybe if i get marrieed, i’ll get married in gold. have a shadowhunter ins;pired wedding. with gothic influences

  9. Cassie’s such an amazing in depth writer. This is truly beautiful in a haunting kind of way. Each line holds such a strong meaning within the words and it’s truly incredible and you can’t help but have flashes of the examples from the books in your mind as you read it. A good broad summary for the Shadowhunter world and the series that take place in it. As I was reading it out loud for the first time (in a British accent to add dramatic Shadowhunter emphasis of course haha) I had to hault and say “oh sh*t” when I got to the new lines because the symbolism gave me chills. I feel like this snippet has a lot of foreshadowing for CoHF (well duh, that’s probably why she shared it knowing the taunting genius that she is) and I don’t know whether to be scared or excited for our beloved characters because it does start to get dark but who knows… Either way I’m going to guess that I’ll be crying when I finish reading the last sentence of the novel. I don’t know… just a hunch haha…

  10. I love it but I’m scared that this is said at one of our beloved characters funeral!! I can’t wait for the book , but I’m also terrified of who we’re going to lose!!

  11. Love it !!!! green is my favorite colour ,good to know its for mending hearts 🙂

  12. The whole rhyme, at last!
