The Outsiders Perspective – A review from a “Non-Fandom” View

While waiting for the premiere of  The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones to start I got talking to a wonderful fan who had won premiere tickets, and whom I had previously met named Teiah Faulk (16). I asked who was with her (who turned out to be her brother Marc Brooks [27].) Knowing how fans can come across I told Marc that he was a very nice older brother and asked if he wouldn’t mind giving me his complete and utterly honest opinion about the movie, as sometimes a review from a fan like me could be taken as biased.

When the movie ended  Teiah  said ” I thought it was amazing… They got most of the facts from the books in. There were some changes but it all worked…If you don’t die from the Clace feels then I don’t know you must be a mundane”  Then I asked what Marc thought to which he replied a short and sweet “I thought it was pretty good.”  As that was not the most sparkling of reviews (and I didn’t want to keep them from getting home) I thanked both Teiah and Marc and they went on their way.

It wasn’t until later when I was contacted by Teiah on twitter informing me, if I would like a more in depth review from Marc we could skype call. I immediately agreed and the following is my interview with Marc…. The 27 year old male who brought his sister to the premiere … non-fandom … TMI virgin (if you don’t mind the term)

What did you think of the movie?

“I was trying to be objective as I watched it. I like action movies and the action sequences were done really well. The set up of the storyline was easy to follow and really fast to understand.”

On a scale from 1-10 what would you rate this movie as?

“Seven”

What was your favorite part of the Movie?

“The one girl shadowhunter the one with the whip I thought she was pretty cool.”

Anything that you found interesting?

“I’m really anxious to see what happens with the incest story line, that was a little weird.”

After seeing the movie would you read books?

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The way that the movie exposed the story was done well.  I’m interested to see what I would come up with  in my own mind as a opposed to seeing it on the screen.”

Would you see the sequel?

“Yes. I’m excited for the sequel I want to see what happens.”

Would you suggest it to your friends? (Particularly guys)

“Yes. I think the action sequences would be something that they would like, and the world they set up was very dark, it was really cool.”

I wanted to personally thank Teiah and Marc for their reviews. It’s always good to have a super fan and an outsider’s view. I think that Marc’s reaction speaks for itself. This truly is a movie that is not just for the “fangirls” but for a good, entertaining, action packed movie.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hits most theaters August 21st. Make sure you take that “non-fan” with you and tell us how you both liked the movie!

  1. I will be going with two friends – a book fan and someone who has no idea about what will transpire. She just likes good movies and a good story. Also, my 14-year-old nephew wants to see it as he is into martial arts and likes the NYC element as well (he also thinks Lily is hot).

  2. I am going with my dad, until she passed away mom and I always saw movies together, so he dones’t want me to have to watch it alone….61 year old man… who knows nothing about the series…. room full of fangirls…. this will be an interesting conversation, wish me well fellow Shadowhunters.

  3. i’m really glad that a ” tmi virgin” gave a review and thought it was good:) im going wit 2 of my friends who are all about The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. imsoexcited just 6 more days!!!!

  4. Interesting!

I’m going with two non-book readers and I’ve already informed them that they WILL love it. One will probably end up reading them after she watches the movie and the other never will read the books. She’s just not a reader, and that’s okay too. Movie adaptations can’t survive on the book readers alone.

Surprisingly the only person I know irl that is a TMI fan and is excited for the movie is my friend’s husband. So there, definitely not just for girls!

  5. Yay we’re converting more shadow hunters

I’m going with my mom who knows nothing of tmi or books in that case and I would love to see her reaction and I’m also going with my sister who only read half of the first book city of bones (she’s in for a shocker) and also with my best friend who loves books and tmi just like mee I’m super excited I CANT WAIT!!!

  7. Seeing it with my dad and sister. Pretty sure my dad knows nothing about TMI, hasn’t even watched the trailer yet. I’ve told my sister a bit about it, but she wouldn’t know the storyline and stuff. So I’ll find out what they think after we see it on Thursday.

  8. I’m going with my best friend, who isn’t exactly as obsessed with books as I am but is an absolute expert in movies. She knows nothing about the story line so I’m excited to see what she thinks, I have no doubt I will adore it but she will be more tricky.

I’m taking 5 friends who almost don’t have a clue about what they are going to see. Well I’ll fangirl enough for them all if they don’t love it as much as I probably will xb

  10. im going with my cousin who i got her into the books

I’m going with my cousin because her, her mom and I are the only people we know who have read the books.

  11. Going to see it saturday with my two friends who love the books just as much as I do 🙂

  12. Dad is taking me and my cousin for the Midnight Premier, then my grandma and same cousin are going again on my birthday (22nd) :’>

    • Forgot to mention– my grandma is a HUGE fan of the series. Dad just wants to see Robert Sheehan— he loves Robbie haha.

I am contemplating on whether or whether not I should take my parents because of the incest thing. I want to just scream “BUT THEY’RE NOT! THEY’RE NOT!”

  14. I went today and I loved it and I took my sister with me who hasn’t read the books and she loved it and she is very excited for the next one and she is going to read the books ➰➰➰😋

  15. Just went to see it today with friends (who didn’t read the books). While we enjoyed the movie, I think that maybe they needed to introduce the characters a bit more, the only name that my friends remembered was “Simon.” So perhaps they should say the character’s names more? (Probably not since the next film would already have the fan base built in).
On the upside, my brother thought that it was cool how Clary adapted to the situations really fast.
