The overnight ratings are in for the Shadowhunters premiere.

“The Mortal Cup” nabbed a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 key demographic and 1.82 million viewers in the U.S., which is a great start for Shadowhunters!

Shadowhunters launched as Freeform/ABC Family’s most-watched series premiere in over two years and cable television’s No. 4 drama launch in the past year.

In the hour, Shadowhunters was the No. 1 cable TV telecast across 18-34 and 12-34 demos and was the No. 1 scripted original cable TV telecast in Adults 18-49 and Women 18-49.

The show also generated 1.1 million engagements over social media on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter ranking No. 2 for the day only behind Pretty Little Liars.

It really shows the power of Cassandra Clare’s fans and the importance of having an existing fandom heading into a series. It even beat MTV’s hit Teen Wolf, which had a 0.4 rating and 0.9 million viewers.

Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Freeform.

  1. Where I live the President was speaking so I missed it.

  2. Can’t wait for next weeks episode… Noooooo a whole week!! How will I live till then. 😥

  3. I was torn between watching Teen Wolf and Shadowhunters last night, but I decided that Teen Wolf can wait until the next day. I couldn’t miss the premiere of Shadowhunters after waiting for almost a year. It was kind of worth it. I know that pilots aren’t perfect and I’m hoping that the series will get better.

  4. I was hoping this was going to be a great representation, but after watching both episodes, it’s clear that it’s not. Why change Luke to another cop? Minority Report (tech) themed Institute? It took us out of this Shadow world and made us think of other shows. Why not explore the material Cassandra Clare provided in her books? It was original. This show is spelling (actually telling in words) the storyline instead of creating some intrigue. There are adult fans, that were hoping for some smart storytelling. Dominic can act, as well as Alex’s character. I miss the dynamic between Isabel and Simon that was in the book. Where is the dimension to Clary and Isabel? You had, (but missed) the opportunity to reveal the story and keep a mystery that keeps someone coming back for more. As much as I wanted this show to succeed, I don’t know that it will.

    • In my opinion, there’s only 2 episodes out for the show. As much as it would be nice to have a premiere that’s really ‘entices’ u into the show and has a fantastic first impression that’s rarely the case in new tv series. It’s a rarity to say the least. To keep audiences engaged they must take it slow with story progression as well as character development (which there will be heaps and HEAPS of time for in the future episodes) that’s the beauty of the media format which is television. I have doubts about the show like everyone, but hopefully it just gets better from here and the characters have a bit more chemistry between them . 🙂

    • Fully agree with you

  5. Kudos to all the actors, the writers however MISSED KEY ELEMENTS and need to pay more attention to the details that are CLEARLY SPELLED OUT in the books or it means the death toll
Of great characters and their stories. I like all of the special effects, fighting scenes and villains galore, but you have to keep the jist of the plots or you’ll sink this series before it begins to get to the good parts of what happens to change the characters!!!

  6. I’m not even going to get started… 😨 Let me watch a few more episodes, then I’ll say what I think. So far… 😒

  7. What happened to the Institute? Jace is not a tech savvy but in the show they all know how to use computers.i love Isabelle here. Where’s Simon’s bandmates? Was that Maureen Brown with Simon? If so,Maureen was a fan not one of the band.

    • I agree with you on the Maureen thing, wasn’t she just a fan who was slightly obsessed with Simon Lewis?

      • More like obsessed to the point of telling people she was his girlfriend I think. Seems like I remember reading that in Fallen Angels.

        Toodles!

    • Shadowhunters are supposed to be old fashioned. It was one of the main things I liked about them. And yes, they made Maureen older and replaced Eric and the dweebs. Which sucked cause I liked the dweebs, and I enjoyed hating 14 year old Maureen. ughhhhh writers. read the books.

      • The old-fashioned culture that they’ve slaughtered is painful to watch, these are like spies on missions with magic powers. Demon fighting was supposed to be really gritty tough dark work not slick missions and demons disappearing in sparks of orange. In that way, the movie succeeded. To end on a good note- loving Simon, Alec, and Jace! I’m sure the others will win me over too.

    • Those were basically all of my comments. I was so upset. They took away some of the best characteristics of the Shadowhunters and their culture. And I hated that Luke was a cop..He tries to blend in as much as possible..how is being a detective doing that? I have yet to watch the second episode, but I am going to give it one more try.

      • Yeah the Luke character is kind of defeating the importance of keeping the Shadow World secret- one of the very important key roles of Shadowhunters. Besides protecting the mundane world, they also have to keep what they do hidden from it at all costs. DEMONIC MURDERS as a headline, and most of the other police related aspects of the show kind of ruin that element.

  8. I really didn’t mind any of the changes. I actually felt some changes were better than the movie. I loved the high tech institute. I know, I know. In the books the Shadowhunters were basically ignorant to the high tech mundane world, but I’m not so fussy about the changes to the tv script that it bothered me that much. I LOVED Magnus! He was spot on. Simon is snarktastic. And I have to say, Luke is hot. I like that he’s a detective in this version. Now Valentine… Not so much. I don’t understand, after all the opportunities they’ve had to find a decent Valentine, movie or television, how they keep missing the mark. He looks like an old man next to youthful Jocelyn. Valentine is handsome with white blonde hair and strong build. How hard is that? That’s really my only complaint. But so far, two thumbs up. I really enjoyed the changes. It kept it interesting for this long time fan.

  9. so proud of the great job they did ➰

  10. Yay, Shadowhunters! This is a big moment for the fandom.

  11. Such a great episode! And the second one just gets better! I already love this series, despite the changes!

  12. I want to hear from some people totally unfamiliar with the books or movie- because while I enjoyed the pilot I was wondering whether it would be really really weird to a ‘mundane’. Did anyone watch it with someone who wasn’t already a fan? I’d be interested to hear 🙂

    • My husband watched the show with me and never read the books. He likes it so far. That is usually hard to do. He looks forward every week watching it with me and I think they are doing a great job. Like they said how much interest would the series keep if everyone knew exactly what would happen every second of the show? I know I’d get bored real quick. The technology in the institute is to bring the show to current times.

  13. its on netflix in the uk but i dont know about the us

  14. I haven’t really had a chance to read the books yet. I enjoy the show so far, except I am not a fan of whoever is playing Clairy. in the first two episodes her acting is terrible I find. Maybe that’s how the character is in the books, I am hoping to get a chance to read them, but until then I hope her acting gets a little better as she gets settled in her role.

  15. I haven’t read the books yet however I am not a fan of whoever is playing Clairy. Her acting is hard to watch. I hope as the show continues she gets more comfortable in her role.

  16. I have to agree- the actress playing Clary is way too ‘over the top’! This is Shadowhunters, not Barney! Jace, Alec, and Magnus are way more in line with the tone of this show!

  17. Show is really improving each week. Character progression is fantastic, actors seem to be improving weekly. Magnus Bane ….. brilliant
