‘CITY OF ASHES’ and ‘CITY OF GLASS’ will be filmed back-to-back if green-lit

Prior to the start of production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones last August, Cassandra Clare mentioned that Constantin Films was already looking ahead to the possibility of sequels and that they were thinking of filming them back-to-back.

In an interview with Showbiz Junkies at WonderCon last month, Cassandra Clare confirmed that the studio plans on filming The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes and The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass back-to-back should the sequels be green-lit.

“They said that if they do the next ones they’re going to shoot them back-to-back, which I think is a really exciting idea because Ashes and Glass happen bang, bang on the heels of each other. This is a really fast-paced story and it only takes place in a couple of weeks. I think that it would be great for them to do that.”

Filming back-to-back would mean filming both City of Ashes and City of Glass sort of as one production, which would reduce costs and save time. So instead of filming 2-3 months and then taking a few month break before heading back, they’d film somewhere between 4-6 months for both movies.

The potential of sequels rests on the success of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (Aug. 23). As for the possibility of sequels, Cassie is hopeful.

“I take nothing for granted in this life,” Cassie said with a laugh. “I would love it, I hope so. I love all of the actors, they’re fantastic and I think Harald (Zwart) did a fantastic job. Everything looks good, but you know…”

It is believed that Jessica Postigo has finished the City of Ashes script–or is near done–and is already working on–or will begin work on–City of Glass, which makes sense considering if City of Bones does well and the studio wants to start production on the next two later in the year or early next year.

Robert Sheehan (Simon) recently told BANG Showbiz that he and the rest of the cast are currently signed on for potential sequels.

So tell all your friends and family to go see The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and then tell them to tell their friends and family so we can get The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes and The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass.

  1. What does she mean back to back? As in filmed together and released separately or making only one movie for both?

    • That means they will be filmed one after the other. No months in between filming. Instead of 2-3 months, which they did with City of Bones, they’ll film 4-6 months straight or something along those lines.

  2. by the angel i hope they don’t change actors on us that would make me on sad fan girl. 😦

  3. I don’t understand it… Are they going to make one movie out of them or two?

    • Two. They would just film them at the same time to save time, money and keep the actors looking the same age. It’s what Summit did withe Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2, as well as what Lionsgate will do with Mockingjay Part 1 and 2.

    • two.. it will be like what they did for braking dawn. they will film both movies at the same time. but release city of ashes first then city of glass after. its because in the two books the surrounding dose not change much so it will make it easy for production to film both during the same time. when they finish filming book 2 they will go strait to book three! i love the idea

      • TMI & TID Fangirl // April 8, 2013 at 3:48 PM //

Are they going to make the rest of the TMI books into movies, like COFA and COLS?

      • its too soon to know if they are i think .. basing probably on all the hype the next two get and how much revenue they bring in decides if they should and can continue with it. i hope they do though. 🙂

  4. i hope they make them all into movies like COFA and COLS but it is to soon to say. i bet they will thoe.

  5. They have all signed on for a few films if COB does well. Don’t quote me on that, I don’t have the source. But I’m pretty sure Robbie said something about it in a recent interview. It would make sense for them to all (Kevin, Robbie, Jamie, Lily, Aidan, Lena…) to sign on for a few.

  6. I hope the movie gets really get reviews so that they make others.

  7. This is so exciting! I will pay to watch COB as many times as I have to in order to make this happen man! It’ll be worth it!

omg omg omg!!! i am soo willing to pay to go see COB a hundred times to make this possible!! i just hope that if the first three go really well they will continue to film COFA and COLS! i would to see COLS as a film, and seeing Team Good and Team Evil in action;D

I’ll be satisfied right now if they just make them up to city of Ashes but then again i’ve read up to that one and read it in a day without putting it down so it’s my favorite so far:P

    • I hope we make it to CoG. I really want to see Idris and the city of glass, eespecially the home Jace grew up in, and dont forget Sabastion/Jonathan. We need to make it to CoG!!!!

  10. I hope COB does well in theaters, I want them to make movies of the other books too!! I’m so excited for August 23 :D!!!!

Yeah I hope they make ALL of the books into movies…..and that includes COFA, COLS, and COHF.

    Go Cassie!! 🙂

  12. I plan on seeing COB at least 5 times while it is playing in the cinema. I will bring ad many people as I can with me and promote it as much as I can whenever I can. It’s such an awesome movie. I am working with the promoters of the Montreal Comiccon which will be Sept. 13 – 15, which is like 3 weeks after the COB release in theatres. We are trying to see if we can get Cassie and some of the cast – or all of the cast to attend as well. Maybe they could but up a monitor and play the trailer and that would really draw people’s attention to the movie and make them want to see it. Last year’s Comiccon sold out in just hours!!! Keeping fingers crossed. 🙂

    • Lol! I plan to spend a fun filled afternoon seeing CoB over and over. It’s a great way to ratchet up the ticket sales.

    • Wow ! Thanks for the tip Diane, if Cassie is there I will definitely go 😀 I’m planning to see COB more than once, with my niece & with some friends too, even though we are old enough to be Clary & Jace’s parents LOL ! I just LOVE YA fiction and TMI/TID are some of my fav & it’s good for my english too 😀 so *fingers crossed* indeed 😀

    • Seriously? Cassandra Clare and the cast in Montreal? That would be so awesome!!!! I’ve been dying to meet them! Count me in 🙂

  13. First off, it will be green lit. And second, it’s smart to film back to back. You dont want the actors aging. Twilight and Harry Potter did that for the same reasons.

  14. Ok People let’s watch this movie as many times as we can so we can get more sequels… Not to mention prove that TMI is way better than Twilight.. But hey that’s just my opinion

    • shadowhunterboys4ever // April 9, 2013 at 2:57 AM // Reply

I also think TMI is better than Twilight …I don’t know why they compare both, they’re both way too different stories. But again its only an opinion

  15. Susan Hepworth // April 8, 2013 at 8:47 PM // Reply

Does that mean that Harold is in or out for the next films?

  16. I’m already promoting all things shadowhunter and I’ll definitely watch it premiere day and the first weekend with different people. Both trailers were awesome and looking forward for more footage, sneak peeks and promotion stuff.
I have a really strong feeling it will be a box office smasher, but we all need to contribute!

Also, HELL YEAH for all the books to be made into films and for TID also.

P.S. Jake Abel for Sebastian! (he looks so much like a younger JRM!)

  17. AAAAAUGH THEY BETTER FILM IN TORONTO!!!!!! Six months of robbie and jamie and kevin and godfrey….. *O*

  18. Will they make CoFA, CoLS and CoHF movie as well? ^o^

I actually don’t think we need to put down one movie to build up another there’s too much negativity on the internet as it is.

    🙂

    • I agree with you 100% TMI is too good for that. I m so happy that there is still people like you in the world 🙂

it would be a really good idea to do this and hopefully all of them make will do for the other books!

Oh, this is getting me so excited for the actors that will be playing, Mais, Maryse, Robert, Max, Aline, and Sebastien. This is all so exciting.

  22. We absolutely love your blog and find the majority

offer guest writers to write content for yourself? I wouldn’t mind publishing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write concerning here. Again, awesome website!

  23. It’s actually a cool and helpful piece of information. I am glad that you just shared this useful info with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.

  24. This film will go down in history, kicking twilight’s butt and every other YA book that is turned into a movie. The cast is brilliant beyond belief. i love how they focused on the who the actors were as a person rather than the looks which always ends up ruining the books in the long run. all the actors are grate and in some of my most beloved films i have watched. I am so proud of Cassandra with all her work she has earned every ounce of what she has gotten.

YES YES YES YES WE BEG YOU MOVIE WORLD MAKE OUR BOOKS GREAT MOVIE ADAPTATIONS! Totaly agree with sarahroesly.
THIS FILM WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY

  26. I hope that they do a little better with CoA, after having seen the movie (there are spoilers here, but I’ll try to be subtle) I will say that it’s going to need as many views as it can get. They got through the first half of the book in less than an hour, meaning most of the stuff in the book was condensed in this very fast and kind of jaunty way. If one had not read the book previously, they won’t get some of the scenes and they won’t connect some of them. It’s all the same exposition, but it doesn’t pull you in like the book does. The movie falls short of the books charm, but has it’s own thanks to its wonderful cast of actors–Jamie has surprised me greatly, and Robert took the show, and Lilly…just brilliant. Going on, I felt it unnecessary for them to put so much emphasis on the nonexistent love triangle between Jace-Clary-Simon, since by book 2, Simon and Clary have come to terms they will never be together, I hope that in the CoA movie, they don’t put any more pressure on it and just leave it as Jace and Clary, instead, putting emphasis on the Isabelle-Simon relationship, which they can add onto by puling from CoFA, with his Maia-Isabelle situation; also, I think they should only make the first trilogy into movies, leave the second trilogy as books because fans of the movies and not the books will feel as though the story is going on too long, not unlike some fans of the book. Plus, the story wraps up perfectly in CoG, and many would be fine with that being the end. If they wanted to, they could even introduce Sebastian in CoA just so there’s that whole aspect, but then again, it probably wouldn’t work. Going on with that, They would introduce things that are prominent in the second trilogy in CoA and CoG, such as the Preator Lupis, which in turn would introduce Jordan, which in turn would introduce the Maia Jordan thing. They could even introduce Lilith in CoG–considering they don’t bring in Raziel, but I doubt they won’t–rather than Raziel, and maybe only the Shadowhunters–not dark–raise Raziel to battle Lilith, and honestly, that would be a Shadowhunter Battle I would watch. If they plan on making the Infernal Devices into a movie, then I hope that they introduce Ithurel in CoG (in the event they make the TMI trilogy) so that in TID they can expound upon that. Thinking on that, could those wings in CoLS belong to Ithurel? Could that be coming full circle? Anyhow, on the actual City of Bones movie, I also hope they improve upon the dialogue and the pacing, slow it down some, because in my mind, as I watched I was like ‘Well that escalated quickly!’ several times. On Magnus: Godfrey was awesome, his English was pretty fluent, I just hope it gets more fluent because it sounds automatic and very, very slightly robotic like he was reading from the cards in the background. Also I could not spot Mrs. Clare in the background as an extra, I wish I could, that’d be epic. Maybe I will when the DVD comes out.

All of that said, I look forward to all the next installments in the Mortal Instruments series, and hopefully the Infernal Devices trilogy (By the Angel, The Infernal Devices is going to be an EPIC movie). Sorry this was such a long comment, I hope that it was worth your time?

I saw the movie, which was pretty good,I just think they made a poor choice for Jace, ahold have been the guy from I am number 4,Beastly. I just think he looks more like the Jace described in the book.

Will there still be a year gap between releasing the second and third movies? I hope not because I CANT WAIT THAT LONG!!!!!

  29. If the series goes well i’d LOVE to also see the Infernal Devices be made in to films! If i remember, that series was like a prequel to TMI, but with different characters, so making those in to movies would be pretty awesome! I know they did The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit in the type of sequence i’m trying to explain. I know i’m looking pretty far ahead in the future, but hey,a girl can dream! And Cassandra Clare rocks, of course! Keep up the good work!
