Alec looked down at the shattered pieces in disbelief. “You BROKE my PHONE.”

Jace shrugged. “Guys don’t let other guys keep calling other guys. Okay, that came out wrong. Friends don’t let friends keep calling their exes and hanging up. Seriously. You have to stop.”

Alec looked furious. “So you broke my brand new phone? Thanks a lot.”

Jace smiled serenely and lay back on the grass. “You’re welcome.”

“I think,” Jace said, “that you don’t want to tell your secrets, so you decided to break up with Alec because..”

“No killing,” Jordan said. “We’re trying to make you feel peaceful, so you don’t go up in flames. Blood, killing, war, those are all non-peaceful things. Isn’t there anything else you like? Rainforests? Chirping birds?”

“Weapons,” said Jace. “I like weapons.”

“I’m starting to think we have a problematic issue of personal philosophy here.”

Jace leaned forward, his palms flat on the ground. “I’m a warrior,” he said. “I was brought up as a warrior. I didn’t have toys, I had weapons. I slept with a wooden sword until I was five. My first books were medieval demonologies with illuminated pages. The first songs I learned were chants to banish demons. I know what brings me peace, and it isn’t sandy beaches or chirping birds in rainforests. I want a weapon in my hand and a strategy to win.”

Jordan looked at him levelly. “So you’re saying that what brings you peace … is war.”

“Now you get it.”

“We shouldn’t,” protested Isabelle. “The Clave has a plan.”

“The Clave has the collective intelligence of a pineapple,” said Jace.

Alec blinked up at them. “Jace is right.”

Isabelle turned on her brother. “What do you know? You weren’t even paying attention.”

“I was,” Alec said, injured. “I said Jace was right.”

“Yeah, but there’s like a 90% chance of me being right most of the time, so that’s not proof you were listening,” said Jace. “That’s just a good guess.”

Magnus rolled onto his back and put his feet up on the arm of the sofa. “What do you care if Alec’s miserable?”

“What do I care?” Jace said, so loudly that Chairman Meow rolled off the couch and landed on the floor. “Of course I care about Alec; he’s my best friend, my parabatai. And he’s unhappy. And so are you, by the look of things. Takeout containers everywhere, you haven’t done anything to fix up the place, your cat looks dead —“

“He’s not dead.”

She turned to look at Sebastian, lying on the bed. He was shirtless, and even in the dim light the old whip weals across his back were visible. She had always been fascinated by Shadowhunters but had never thought she would find one whose personality she could stand for more than five minutes, until Sebastian.

“Simon,” said a voice at his shoulder, and he turned to see Izzy, her face a pale smudge between dark hair and dark cloak, looking at him, her expression half-angry, half-sad. “I guess this is the part where we say goodbye?”

A moment later, Helen had returned; she was walking slowly now, and carefully, her hand on the back of a thin boy with a mop of wavy brown hair. He couldn’t have been older than twelve, and Clary recognized him immediately. Helen, her hand firmly clamped around the wrist of a younger boy whose hands were covered with blue wax. He must have been playing with the tapers in the huge candelabras that decorated the sides of the nave. He looked about twelve, with an impish grin and the same wavy, bitter-chocolate hair as his sister.

Jules, Helen had called him. Her little brother.

The impish grin was gone now. He looked tired and dirty and frightened. Skinny wrists stuck out of the cuffs of a white mourning jacket whose sleeves were too long for him. In his arms he was carrying a little boy, probably not more than two years old, with the same wavy brown hair that he had; it seemed to be a family trait. The rest of his family wore the same borrowed mourning clothes: following Julian was a brunette girl about ten, her hand firmly clasped in the hold of a boy the same age: the boy had a sheet of tangled black hair that nearly obscured his face. Fraternal twins, Clary guessed. After them came a girl who might have been eight or nine, her face round and very pale between brown braids.

The misery on their faces cut at Clary’s heart. She thought of her power with runes, wishing that she could create one that would soften the blow of loss. Mourning runes existed, but only to honor the dead, in the same way that love runes existed, like wedding rings, to symbolize the bond of love. You couldn’t make someone love you with a rune, and you couldn’t assuage grief with it, either. So much magic, Clary thought, and nothing to mend a broken heart.

“Julian Blackthorn,” said Jia Penhallow, and her voice was gentle. “Step forward, please.”

Julian swallowed and handed the little boy he was holding over to his sister. He stepped forward, his eyes darting around the room. He was clearly scouring the crowd for someone. His shoulders had just begun to slump when another figure darted out onto the stage. A girl, also about twelve, with a tangle of blond hair that hung down around her shoulders: she wore jeans and a t-shirt that didn’t quite fit, and her head was down, as if she couldn’t bear so many people looking at her. It was clear that she didn’t want to be there — on the stage or perhaps even in Idris — but the moment he saw her, Julian seemed to relax. The terrified look vanished from his expression as she moved to stand next to him, her face ducked down and away from the crowd.

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”

    • me too… actually, I was writing before, but TMI gave me inspiration to go on… it’s nearly finished now, and all congrats goes to Cassie!

    • OMG guys!!!! There’s a girl who’s admiring Sebastian!!!! It’s a dream come true. So I have this fantasy: Sebastian will fall in love with a girl (I named her Camryn and she has black hair and green eyes) and then at the end Jocelyn will learn to love him, so he’ll learn the error of his ways, but he’ll somehow turn into an angel like thing. All of this probably won’t happen but I re-live this fantasy EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! So PLEASE Ms. Clare, please give me the time of day by making this happen!!!! Whenever I fall in love with series, the last book ALWAYS makes me depressed. So PLEASE give Sebastian a happy ending, and DON’T kill of him, Alec, Magnus, Simon or Isabelle. (These 5 are my favourites!!!)

      • Alex Pettyfer would make an AMAZING Sebastian. Before, I wanted him to be Jace, but since someone else is…
        OMG… Michael Seater would be an awesome Sebastian as well!!! And Selena Gomez could be my fantasy Camryn that I made up for Sebastian!!!

    • I hope it’s not Jace, Clary, Simon, Isabelle or Magnus. I don’t know why but I have a feeling that both Sebestian (Jonathon) and Alec will die

      • I have feeling it will be either Alec or Magnus of the main characters who dies. They’re my two favorites and all my favorite characters always die. Also I’m pretty sure Sebastian will die as well.

      • I’m really scared that it might be Jace, because for TDA, in the description for Emma Carstairs she wrote something about her being the strongest shadowhunter SINCE Jace Lightwood.
        I REALLY HOPE Jace DOESN’T die because he is my FAVOURITE character from ALL the books I’ve read, and if ANYTHING happens to him, I will be CRUSHED!

      • Well, we have reasoinable reasons to believe that it won;t be Clary or Jace – 1 because they are th main main characters, and 2 because Cassie has mentioned them appearing briefly possibly in TDA

      • if its simon i think im going to cry , simon and isabelle are so cute <3 but i think t would also make sense since simon doesnt want to remain a vampire forever :( so he might die

      • although i agree with Ria, that ‘since’ has been killing the entire fandom from the time the blurb was published. and as TDA is set only a few months/years after TMI, he cant die of old age

    • IT SORT OF ANNOYS ME CLARY IS ON 3 COVERS, OF THE SO FAR FIVE BOOKS, I KNOW SHE IS A MAIN CHARACTER AND ALL BUT STILL, WHO DOESN’T WANT TO SEE JUST A LITTLE BIT OF ISABELLE AND HERBAD-ASS SHADOW HUNTER GEAR. I THOUGHT SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON A PAIRED COVER OF ONE OF THE BOOKS, MEH DON’T MIND. ALSO IF MAIN CHARACTERS HAVE TO DIE, THEN THAT SUCKS!!! I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS, MAYBE SIMON CAN LIKE DEVAMPIRE, OR SOMEHOW BECOME ALL YAY AND HAPPY WITH ISABELLE.

      • Honestly, i’m kind of hoping for Magnus – I mean come on, he has been in every single last one of her books to date, and yet still has not gotten his own cover… :( Although, I get why he hasn’t, i don’t see why he shouldn’t.

      • I think it would be awesome if City of Heavenly Fire had Jace, Clary and Sebastian on the cover. It might be just me, but I think it would be the perfect way to end the series.

  18. Oh God. She’s gonna kill off Simon and I’m gonna die. Or Magnus. But if Magnus dies Alec will die too. And that screws up Isabelle and Jace too much. So it’s Simon. :( It’s always my favorites who die. NOOOOOOO! But nevertheless, I can’t wait for 2014. At least there will be Clockwork Princess to tide u over.

  25. just wondering, but which couple are all of you intrigued by the most. because there is clary and jace as sort of saving the world main characters. then there is magnus and alec who are having trouble in relationship and a lot of people think will be killed off. and then there is simon and isabelle, with the whole isabelle opening up and needing simon and the difficulty of simon being imortal. i find personally the simon and isabelle relationship quite interesting currently but there is still another book. is it just me? thats all i’m asking :)

    • I don’t think she will kill another Lightwood child. Also the cover of the book is something like ” Will love be their distraction or salvation” sadly it doesn’t have people on it.

    • I like jorden and maia thats a cute couple i cant wait for the 6th book. ill be 15 and its gonna be awesome i cant wait for the movie!!!

  27. I don’t think Sebastian is going to die. Just because Cassie has a way of always surprising us with outrageous endings. I thought maybe the person to die would be Luke, but then he got hurt and was ok. So then it would just be a repeat sort of. So now I think it will be Magnus or we’ll meet another character who might become huge and die. Like Tessa. She was in City of Glass.

  37. I wonder why Alec wasn’t paying attention….maybe he was thinking about Magnus? :)

    Also, from one of the snippets it seems like the heavenly fire is having bad effects on Jace. They are trying to keep him calm, which means that something bad will happen if they don’t. Maybe the heavenly fire reacts with his moods, so that it lashes out and hurts those around him when he is angry or (hopefully not) feeling especially passionate? Just a guess on the latter, but the former seems pretty likely.

    And to me it makes the most sense that Simon would die. He has the entire eternity in front of him, and he never wanted that. He was never a warrior, but still wants to protect those he cares about, especially Clary and now Isabel. I can just see him saving at least one life, probably more, and giving his own in the process. It’s just so….Simon.
    The other choices would be Jace or Clary, which as the main protagonists seems very unlikely, Isabel, which would be killing off yet another lightwood, which I do not really see happening, or Alec or Magnus, which would lead to thousands of fans storming Cassie at her home with pitchforks and torches and killing her while she sleeps. If you were her, who would you choose to die? :)

    • Mayb Tessa will b n cohf since she had heavenly fire n her after she changed into ithurral (and she is technically related to jace after being married to will.

    I think that simon, either jocelyn or lucian, maybe jace- at the very end- it would suck so much if he did though… or maybe he gets stripped of him shadowhunter ability stuff, and possibly alec will die…

  52. When I found out I had to wait until 2014 I cried. But it’s okay because in like 3-4 months CP2 comes out and it’s probably going to take me a year to recover from that book as far as I can tell by the snippets.
    I also think that Magnus will die…
    Cassie better not kill Simon off because he’s my favorite character, a long with Jace.

Well I was retreading CoB and I got to the part where Jace’s fortune is being told “you have an enemy” and I asked Cassie about it on tumblr if it was Sebastian or Valentine or someone else and she said “you’ll find out” so this of course drove me mad. So call me crazy but I think someone close to them will switch sides against team good. Oh and I also think the person that dies will either be Simon or Alec, and maybe she was using Max as a foreshadow for the character that dies… Probably completely wrong but I had to spill<3

  56. Isn’t Luke considered a main charecter? I kind of think that the Parents will die. None of our four shadowhunters really need their parents to relie on anymore and in teen storys the the parents always die shortly after becoming not neede but still wanted.

    • I AM! NO JOKE! I’ve been reading them since I was 6 and bring them EVERYWHERE with me! Florida, Disneyland, Disneyworld, Washington, Oregon, New York, Hawaii, Greece, Italy, The White House, Russia, and pretty much any place i go. I keep a copy of TMI with me 24/7.   96. I am so puzzled about the whole someone finding sebastian fascinating/not being repulsed by him situation. I’m thinking theres a huge chance its a new character, it’s clearly not a shadow hunter and im thinking it must be some form of downlworlder (it states that shes never really liked the personalities of shadowhunters, which means shes known shadowhunters for a while, right?) so for that reason I cant see it being maureen, she would have communicated with enough shadowhunters to really know what theyre like? and theres no one else who I feel could really fit the part, except camille, but shes out of the picture now. this is absolute torment! ATLEAST CLOCKWORK PRINCESS IS ALMOST HERE! WOOOOO!

    • I think the “She” is the seelie queen . (I hope I have written it down correctly) It make sense, she sided with Sebastian; and she is old enough to say “was always… ” Just a theory thought. But maybe Sebastian wont have to die is he will be “cleaned” (by the fire Jace is carrying)

      • You’re right, It might be the Seelie Queen though I’m also thinking it might be a new character, more likely a downworlder.
        Some small part of me hopes that Sebastian doesn’t die. I mean he deserves a second chance after having been experimented on by his father, being unwanted by his mother and sister and apparently having to deal with being alone all the time.

  97. hmm….. why was magnus so defensive about chairman meow?… very conspicuous. why would a warlock who lives forever grow so attached to a cat? I think there’s more story to chairman meow than we think:)

  98. I can’t wait! But to everyone who is saying that Alec will die, I don’t think he will. Because Cassie already killed off Max, and I don’t think she would be so cruel as to kill off two of the Lightwood siblings. However, I do believe that she has it in her to kill off Magnus.

    • Well, killing little kid was pretty hard, so I don’t think killing Alec will be harder.. but who knows what Cassie thinks. Do you think that she knows the ending already?

  102. Guys look on the bright side. Stop thinking Simon’s going to die. He won’t. First off he already did.(LOL). But he’s actually mentioned by Clary in the Shadowhunter’s Codex:

    Also, check out the cover! I can’t wait to read the book! Even though its probably like their version of a history book and I never actually read my school books (LOL, who does?) But since Cassandra Clare wrote it, I am so buying it. Just like everything else.

  104. I’m back! Clockwork Princess had me out of commission (in a puddle of tears), but I’m back! I think Sebastian should leave “Sebastian was here!” sticky notes all over the institute while people are sleeping. That’s what I would do if I was an evil mastermind with a portal ring.

    • Logan Lerman is Percy Jackson. I’d HATE seeing him as another book character, especially a shadowhunter. The demigod to Shadowhunter transition just wouldn’t work

  119. Omg, I cannot wait for this book to come out. Right after Clockwork Princess ended (after I sat in the bathroom, staring at the tears running down my cheeks, that is) I was like, “Gimme the next thing… I’ll die from waiting!” I cannot wait for the movie to come out, or CoHF!

  123. I cant believe I read the first book in 2007 when it came out and I was 14 and now the final book is coming out and I’ll be 21. [old lady over here!! Awh yeah!] As for cover ideas maybe the cover will have something to do with Raziel. I dunno Heavenly Fire… Angels… Could be a possibility. Or maybe Shadowhunters in white for mourning with Idris burning.

  127. OMG guys!!!! There’s a girl who’s admiring Sebastian!!!! :D It’s a dream come true. So I have this fantasy: Sebastian will fall in love with a girl (I named her Camryn and she has black hair and green eyes) and then at the end Jocelyn will learn to love him, so he’ll learn the error of his ways, but he’ll somehow turn into an angel like thing. All of this probably won’t happen but I re-live this fantasy EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! So PLEASE Ms. Clare, please give me the time of day by making this happen!!!! Whenever I fall in love with series, the last book ALWAYS makes me depressed. So PLEASE give Sebastian a happy ending, and DON’T kill of him, Alec, Magnus, Simon or Isabelle. (These 5 are my favourites!!!)

  151. OMG!! One of the main characters dies, that will literally make me break down and cry. I love Clary and Jace, they are the best and I may have a slight crush on Jace (Can I have a crush on a fictional character?) Isabelle and Simon (Simon is sooooo cute!) just have to end together as do Magnus and Alec. Max already died so it can’t be another Lightwood. Sebatian has my permision to die whenever he likes I just hope her doesnt hurt anyone else and I’m so super duper happy that Jocelyn and Luke are together, I wanted this to happen at the beginning but better late than never!! I adore Cassandra Clare and hope to be like her one day :-P
