Screen Gems Hasn’t Been Attached to ‘Mortal Instruments’ Since Aug. ’11, Constantin Films Wants to Begin Filming in Aug.

A report by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday sent the Mortal Instruments fandom into a frenzy. It was reported that Screen Gems had dropped The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. But Cassandra Clare cleared up the rumor and actually said that Screen Gems hasn't been involved with The Mortal Instruments since August 2011. Sony gave it to Columbia Pictures to develop at that time. Constantin Film holds the film rights and controls if/when the film gets made. And according to Clare, Constantin wants to begin filming in August of this year. Contrary to THR's report, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is NOT CANCELLED. Lily Collins (Clary) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace) are still attached to the project. Scott Stewart, who was attached to direct the film, was dropped from the project when The Mortal Instruments was handed over to Columbia Pictures in August. Here's what The Hollywood Reporter had to say:
In addition, sister label Screen Gems has untethered itself from Mortal Instruments, the adaptation of the Cassandra Clare YA fantasy series. Scott Stewart had been attached to direct while Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower were attached to star in the story of a human woman helping human-angel hybrids fight evil forces. Constantin Film, which controls the rights, may self-finance or seek a co-financier as it develops this on its own. Stewart, meanwhile, is no longer directing, focusing on a TV version of his Screen Gems flick, Legion.
Clare spoke out about the news and actually gave fans a better explanation. Here are interesting tidbits:
  • The movie isn't cancelled
  • Screen Gems hasn't been involved with the project for some time (it was handed off to Columbia Pictures back in August 2011)
  • Constantin Films will actually make the movie
  • Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower are still attached to the project and will be for some time
  • Cassie sent Constantin Films some suggestions for casting Simon last week
  • Cassie told Constantin Films that she liked Logan Lerman for Simon
  • Constantin Films is aiming for filming to begin in August 2011
  • The movie is still "in development" until filming begins
Here is what Cassie posted:

So, THR’s is a slightly bizarre version of events. Screen Gems didn’t drop the project; they weren’t involved with it — it was given to Columbia Pictures to develop back in… August of 2011? But yes, Screen Gems and Scott Stewart aren’t involved with the movie of City of Bones any more. The rights are owned by Constantin, they always have been. Constantin makes movies: they just made The Three Musketeers with Logan Lerman. Screen Gems would have been the distributor and co-producer but it was never their project; it’s Constantin’s. Screen Gems hasn’t actually been involved with the project since — well, let’s just say it’s been a while. (Some people have asked me if this is the news Marlene King was talking about on Twitter last week but it wouldn’t be; she was brought on after Screen Gems wasn’t involved any more. She’s never worked with them so it wouldn’t be news to her.)

Why didn’t I tell you guys? This isn’t really even the sort of thing that people tell me. Constantin owns the movie rights: who distributes it and co-finances and all that isn’t actually anything to do with me in any real meaningful sense. Projects get moved from studio to studio all the time — Twilight started at Paramount and went to Summit, etc. Screen Gems isn’t even the only production company CoB has been involved with, or the most recent. And half the time I don’t know about it, so 1) I can only give out news that’s been confirmed and okayed for me to give out and 2) half the time I don’t even know this stuff or it’s so in flux there would be no point saying anything about it if I did.

In this case, I will say:

1) The movie isn’t “cancelled.” This really doesn’t make much of any difference at all except in who distributes it.

2) Lily and Jamie are still attached. I mean, it’s been months since SG was connected with the project, and they’re still attached, so I’m fairly confident they’ll be attached for the foreseeable future. Will they be attached forever? NO idea. But nothing about this news makes it any more or less likely.

3) Really, this makes no difference to anything. I know words like “dropped” sound shocking and horrifying but in this context, it doesn’t mean much. I talked to Constantin last week and actually gave them a list of actors I liked for Simon (because why not?), and they gave me a schedule they expected to start filming by (August.)

No movie is going to be made until it’s greenlit. The movie was in development. It’s still in development. That said, Hollywood is like a big pinball machine. Projects bounce up, they roll around, they go this way, they go that way. This is a bounce.

  1. What about that stupid woman on twitter that kept teasing that she had TMI movie news?? Was this her news??? All I can say is I hope someone else picks it up! I was really looking forward to seeing this series come to life in film 😦

    • I agree Cherith, that was such a tease 😦

    • Did you actually read the whole article or not?

Cassie said; ‘Some people have asked me if this is the news Marlene King was talking about on Twitter last week but it wouldn’t be; she was brought on after Screen Gems wasn’t involved any more. She’s never worked with them so it wouldn’t be news to her.’

      • Uh yes…I read the part BEFORE they updated it with this new information :p and now I feel better about it having had the entire info!

  2. since there is going to be a new studio, does that mean that they will have to go through all the motions again? Like the cast, script ect?

  3. NOOOOOOOOO

  4. Whaaaaatt?!?! No. :/

  5. No! This cant happen! I have been so excited for this movie! We all have! Will they I agree with “sugabuga21” are they going to recast and rewrite the script? I do feel like they could have picked people who were more characteristically suited to the characters, like maybe Alex Pettyfer as Jace? Hmm? I hope so. I really hope that another company like maybe Summit will pick it up. Please let there be someone to pick it up! We were all so excited to see the screen adaptation of this amazing series!

    • Alex Pettyfer DO NOT WANT to play Jace. Get over it. I don’t really like JCB as Jace, either, but well.

    • In case you missed it in the above article – Lily Collins and Jamie Bower are still ATTACHED to this project – so no, no change as far as Jace-casting or re-casting goes, thank God. And please, stop being so delusional about stupid Pettyfer; do you want to see an old, shrivelled-up person playing a 16 yr old boy???!
Like Cassie said, just because SG dropped the project, it doesn’t mean the movie won’t be made as was planned. Hell, maybe Cassie can have more control over who gets cast (Logan for Simon, yaay!!!) and more creative input. This could actually be a good thing, so let’s just remain positive! 🙂

    • Cause Summit did such a ~fantastically awesome~ job with the already lame Twilight series? Give me a break. The books were lacking and the movies were HORRIBLE (the two I saw). If Summit was doing TMI movies, I’d know to never ever ever try to see them, as they’d never be able to hope to do justice to a fun series of books but instead ruin them with terrible scripts and acting.
As it is, I’m looking forward to the actors cast as Pettyfur~ is awful. SO GLAD he’s not attached to this.

  6. OK GUYS! did you read the article or not?? Screen gems had backed off from the project in august 2011 and then, constantine handed the project over to COLUMBIA PICTURES! so THERE IS A STUDIO ATTACHED! the script is the same, the cast is the same. Constantine is looking to start filming in august 2012! we have to cast rest of the characters and get a director since scott stewart isn’t involved any more.

oh and AP didn’t want to be jace! so get over it.

  7. Yeah, seriously. READ! It clearly states that both Jamie and Lilly are STILL CAST AS JACE AND CLARY! It does NOT say they’ve been dropped. AND jeez… I’m as eager as the next person, but you need patience. A lot of films take years to be developed. So you know, be patient! It will happen, and when it does, THEN you can spazz/jump/scream all you like. Don’t jump to conclusions. Just sayin’ 🙂

  8. I just want to point out that some of the earlier comments came when we thought the movie was indeed cancelled. I’ve edited the post several times since then.

    • Thanks for pointing that out! I commented on this last night before you updated it! So I wish ppl would stop screaming at other ppl and realize we aren’t stupid 🙂

  9. THIS IS TAKING 4EVER!

  10. Who the heck is Constatin. I’ve never heard them or Screen Gems before the CoB movie. Oh, and I’m ready to wait for the CoB movie I have all the time in the world:)

  11. okay so i’m a little pissed but it’s not cassis, or lilys, jamies, or marlene’s faults. i guess she never did say that she was involved with screen gems and maybe tmi news still come soon. or maybe she though something would happen but something different happened. constants films self-finace then if you can get a studio to agree by a certian time or talk to summit!

  13. I really don’t care where the movie is being made… I just want to see it! I wish my parents would let me see it when it came! 🙂

    • Hahaha, well, maybe you’ll just be old enough by the time the movie is actually made and comes out for your parents to let you see it, eh?!

uhh… Well. Screw you Screen Gems, you just lost a lot of money XD

  15. I don’t want to come across as ungrateful but august??
