Rumor: Jonathan Rhys Meyers in negotiations to play Valentine in CITY OF BONES
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in negotiations to play Valentine Morgenstern in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in negotiations to join the cast of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, an adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s YA fantasy novel from Constantin Film and Unique Pictures.
Harald Zwart is directing the movie, which is due to begin production later this month in Toronto.
Lily Collins leads the cast as a young woman who discovers she is the descendant of a secret cadre of half-angel warriors called Shadowhunters locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons. Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King wrote the script.
Rhys Meyers will play Valentine Morgenstern, described as a powerful but insane Shadowhunter looking to make the world pure at any cost.
Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey and Mad Men’s Jared Harris and Kevin Zegers are among the cast.

Seriously, the age of the actors playing the characters are ridiculous and unreal. 23/24 year old actors playing 16 year old characters? A 27 year old actor playing an 18 year old? 29 year old playing 35? 35 year old playing 40+ character? Only Lena Headey and Jocelyn are the same age.
THANK YOU! It’s getting ridiculous. I’m nearly to the point of boycotting this damn film. The casting director has no freaking idea what she’s doing. Lena Headey is the ONLY great casting choice so far.

pl — I have kind of lost interest in the movie when Jamie was cast. It remains to be seen whether I’m going to see the movie or not.
Justine — That’s true, but assuming they make all 6 movies, will the actors still look believable playing a 16 year old when they’re in 30’s? I still think they should have cast under 20 year old actors for Jace, Clary, Simon and Izzy.

Great….JRM is the perfect Valentine. He’s a very talented actor. His performance as king Henry ViII in the Tudors was outstanding…it’s a must see.

I’m sure the adults are all around the same age, 37 and 38 in the books. This guy is cute, now picture him with white hair and black eyes! Look at Glee, everyone is a lot older than their actual 16, 17 or 18 years of age. We can’t be too opinionated without having seen the movie, so best to save our opinions till after the movie, right? Now, there’s Raphael to be cast and I do hope Church is in the movie.Lets hope the script and actors do the book justice 🙂

Although there is no doubt Jonathan is a talented actor, he would not be someone I would consider for the role at all. He may be older than he appears but he still looks the same age as Jamie Campbell Bower, only
not even as tall. Physically he is all wrong, he’s too short and too thin and small boned. They can probably make him look older but they can’t make him look much bigger. I pictured someone like Alec Baldwin or John Trovolta in thos role. They have Valentine’s physicaliy as described on the books. Someone like these two actors who have a much more commanding and daunting presence. Both actors have those steel blue eyes too. I hope this rumor about Jonathon is a mistake.
To all the people saying Jonathan Rhys Metyers looks too young. Have you seen pics of him recently? He looks pretty damn rough. He’s been partying pretty hard for years, had addiction issues and gone to rehab multiple times and it shows on his face. He doesn’t look too young at all.

I loved him in The Tudors…he’s a great actor and I think he would look good as Valentine….I’m not too concerned about the ages, I mean they made the Harry Potter actors look like they were 30 or so even when they were they were in their early 20s. Makeup can have a big effect, until official set pictures are released I think I’m happy with the casting.

I’ll admit, my first thought when I read this was, “Isn’t Jonathan Rhys Meyers a little young for this?” but then I saw the picture, and read some of the comments. In Glee, there are people in their late twenties/early thirties playing teenagers. And the magic of Hollywood is that they can make actors look younger/older than they really are. Take brad Pitt in Benjamin Button as an example. And in Hollywood, it really isn’t the age that matters, or really even the looks. It’s about who can play the roles the most convincingly. I’ve seen Jonathan Rhys Meyes and I thought he was a great actor. If he is cast, and Cassie makes a comment about how great Jonathan is for the role, then I’ll believe that Jonathan is the perfect Valentine.
And for those who hate the cast, just remember they all have Cassie’s personal seal of approval. Especially Lily and Jamie and Simon.

she didn’t say she liked them all, you could guess when the lady’s lying and when she’s not. it’s pretty obvious she likes jamie. they’ve shown her his audition and she cried when she saw it. and i don’t think she’s super exited about lily but she thinks it’s ok. plus the casting directors are proffessional people and we’re just fans, so we must trust in theire choices.
I think it is wrong to judge Cassie´s feelings like that. We are not her. I do have objections about the cast but even I do not “hate” it neither. And they have not done such a bad job.
Exactly! Cassie will say all the actors are perfect. There’s no way she’d say anything negative, even if she’s not a fan of the actor. She has to be polite and diplomatic – someone took an interest in her books and wanted to make them into a movie! Doesn’t happen often. Hope the actors and script do the books justice.
YES! love him! He’s a great actor, sexy, and …um did I say sexy. He’d be perfect, he’s played a bad guy before and as for him being too young, 1. there are makeup artists for a reason 2. he isn’t suppose to be really old the Uprising happened in his early twenties 3. Luke, Jocelyn and Valentine are all suppose to be around the same age but, Lena Hedley’s 39 and Aidan Turner is 29 so Meyers (35)is right in-between so during the course of the movie he will be the only one who’ll stay the appropriate age.
I can see it working. I mean in the book Jocelyn and Valentine were teenagers when they had Jonathan so they would be in their early thirties. And seeing as Luke is a werewolf, i think he would retain a youthful appearence so Aidan Turner doesnt seem quite so bad.
i wouldve preffered daniel craig. and this is outrageous that everyone is hotter than moi. i am after all the sexiestt shadowhunter alive…

I just read everyone’s comments. I think people need to relax about the age thing. I know it is hard when actors look different than what one pictures in their head, but really I think everything will be just fine. Have some faith that these people are all professionals…including the casting people. I doubt the big wigs of this project would allow them to make horrid choices that would make this movie ridiculous instead of amazing. Also, does Clare ever say how old Valentine is? It would make sense for him to be about 35 if he has a 15 year old. That would be perfectly reasonable. Also I agree with the person who said that with Luke being a werewolf, it would make sense for him to appear youthful. I think if you embrace the cast instead of thinking about all the ways it might not be right, it will allow you to enjoy this amazing story coming to life. I’m ready to fall in love with Jamie as Jace, even if I can’t quite picture him in the role yet.
First of all lets look at this in terms of acting rather than his actual age. I got chills think of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine, as a charismatic, manipulative yet enchanting villain, as an actor he’s perfect. Second it’s easier to make an actor look older rather than younger, they also managed to make Jonathan look older in the tudors throughout the years. Third he and Jamie have very similar physical features I would believe that they were related that it was believable. From wat I’ve seen so far this casting is concerned more with acting ability and how they are portraying the characters, we all need to let go of the ages, they apparently have trust in their make up department so should we. I’d rather see a film with kick ass actors than a film where maybe the actors were the exact ages they needed to be!!
They hit a grand slam with this casting. It’s always heart warming when posers call the author Cassie Clare a liar.

The comments about him being only 35 make me laugh b/c that is pretty much that age he needs to be. If Clary is 15/16 that would make him 20/21 when she was born and in the books that about how old he should be.
Cassie said Valentine is fours older than Jonathan, so that would make him 39….
