The Week In Review

In Case You Missed It: Movie Monday got things kicked off with some discussion about who should play the lovable Simon Lewis in the "City of Bones" movie. As we already found out from Cassandra Clare that the search for Simon was on even before Jace was cast so we can assume that the casting process for Simon, as well as the other characters, is in full swing. The biggest news to hit the "Mortal Instruments" in quite a while was the announcement that British actor Jamie Campbell Bower was cast as Jace Wayland. The casting directors had spent the previous five months searching for the perfect actor to take on the role and they seemed to have hit the jackpot with the casting of Bower. Shortly after Bower's casting, "Mortal Instruments" fans sounded off on the casting decision. The initial reaction wasn't exactly positive but the reaction was felt around the Internet. Cassandra Clare called it “the equivalent of a gigantic nuclear bomb dropped in the middle of my readership.”

Cassandra Clare raved about Bower’s casting as Jace. In an interview with Hollywood Crush, Cassie discussed the audition process and how watching Bower’s audition with Lily Collins and how she “literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen.” She talked about how much of a relief it is to finally have Jace and reassured fans that Bower is the right guy for the role.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritties. Why is Jamie so perfect for Jace?

I have seen his audition tape. They sent it to me because they were so impressed with it, and they wanted to get my feedback. People have been asking me what scene he filmed. The answer is a bunch of different scenes. He did scenes where he had to be funny. He did scenes where he had to be romantic. He did scenes where he had to be angry and badass and he pulled the all of amazingly.

He auditioned with Lily, and he and Lily had incredible chemistry that sort of blazed off the scene. I’m just sitting here watching this on my computer, and you know, he was not the only person they’ve ever sent me to look at. I’ve gotten lots of headshots and this and that, and I’m watching the audition and I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen. And it’s an incredible feeling to see that even as an audition. This is amazing. He was snarky funny where he needed to be snarky funny, and he was badass where he needed to be badass. And he and Lily were incredible together.

In fact, after all the auditions, because she’s done auditions with a bunch of different actors, she wrote to the head of the studio, Clint Culpepper of Screen Gems, and she was like, ‘It’s Jamie. It’s gotta be Jamie.’ He told me that, this was before he had seen the audition, he told me that he wrote back and he was like, ‘He’s a rock star hipster kind of guy. Do you think he can be a badass warrior-dude, as well?’ And she wrote back and said, ‘That is Jace standing there. When you watch the audition you’ll see what I see.’

Continuing with the reactions of the Jace casting, “Mortal Instruments” experts, including myself and TMI Examiner and Mundie Moms, sounded off on the Jamie as Jace casting in a chat with Hollywood Crush.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

“The Mortal Instruments” Examiner Natalie C. Markey was quite pleased with Bower’s casting.

“I was really excited, and I think fans kind of got a preview of the idea of him being Jace in the days leading up, the week leading up, as there was some speculation,” she said. “I think he has a lot of experience. Not only do I think he looks the part, but he has the acting chops to pull it off. Plus, he’s had experience working with big-name actors in major franchises, so we know he can pull off a lot of pressure.”

Katie Bartow of Mundie Moms pointed out that fans are going to have to get used to not seeing their first pick in the role.

“There’s been a lot of, ‘That’s not who people pictured as Jace.’” she said. “So there are a lot of people who are anxious to see what Jamie’s going to bring to the big screen.”

I pointed out that fans should give Bower a chance and not judge him based on the initial reaction and give him a chance to prove his worthiness as Jace.

“The fans need to just really trust in the casting and the studio that they made the right choice,” I said. “Don’t freak out. We haven’t seen the audition tapes. Just wait until you get your first glance at him to start judging him. But give him a chance. Everyone deserves a chance.”

Soon after Jamie Campbell Bower had landed the role of Jace, the girl that will be playing his love interest in Clary, Lily Collins reassured fans that “Jamie is perfect for the role! Just wait and see…”

Natalie C. Markey of The Mortal Instruments Examiner received a photo from Screen Gems that they used as a reference to see how Bower would look with Jace’s characteristics. There was a mixed reaction among fans but keep in mind it’s a photoshopped manipulation and that real contacts will look a heck of a lot better.

Fan art depicting Lily as Clary and Jamie as Jace hit the internet and let me just say that it amazing. I’m sure the fan art will continue to surface as we pass the one week mark of Jamie’s casting. (Side note: calling all video geniuses: we need some Lily/Jamie as Clary/Jace vids! Please and thank you!)

Switching from movie to book mode, the jacket copy (a summary basically) for the highly anticipated “Clockwork Prince” was released. The second installment of “The Infernal Devices” is due out December 6, 2011. Let’s just say the seven month wait is really starting to get to me…

Here is the jacket copy:

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

That’s the week’s highlights in a nutshell. What a week it was. I doubt a week will top this one for a long time.
