City of Bones movie cut The end of the year is approaching and a new year is just on the horizon. The year 2012 brought Cassandra Clare fans a lot of exciting news, including plenty of action in regards to THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES

CASTING

SUMMER 2012

Mortal Instruments cast

Up until summer 2012 the only two characters cast were leads Clary (Lily Collins) and Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower). That all changed on June 19, when Jemima West was cast as Isabelle and then the casting announcements followed in bulk soon after. On July 6, Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet were cast as Pangborn and Blackwell, respectively. The casting of Simon was said to be a hard one so when Robert Sheehan was announced as our Simon on July 11, the fandom was quite excited. On July 19, the castings of Magnus (Godfrey Gao), Jocelyn (Lena Headey) and Hodge (Jared Harris) were announced. Another pair of castings was announced on July 30 with Aidan Turner and CCH Pounder as Luke and Madame Dorothea, respectively. After a rumor it was confirmed on August 1 that Kevin Zegers had been cast as Alec. The following day we learned Stephen R. Hart would be portraying Silent Brother Jeremiah. Jonathan Rhys Meyers' casting as evil Shadowhunter Valentine on August 10 was the final piece to the casting puzzle before filming got underway. A couple other minor characters were announced once filming was underway in Toronto: Elyas M’Barek (Vampire Lieutenant), Harry van Gorkum (Alaric) and Chris Ratz (Eric).

SONY PICTURES LAUNCHES MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS

Sony Pictures launched several social media outlets during filming. The official website–TheMortalInstrumentsMovie.com–was the first to go live in July. On Aug. 23, the one-year mark from the theatrical release of the film, they launched the official movie Facebook page. Following soon after were TwitterYouTube and an interactive site: soundlessinsight.com, where you can get your fortune read by Madame Dorothea.

PRODUCTION IN TORONTO

TMI Set Day 2

Filming on THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES began in Toronto on August 20, 2012, kicking off what was an exciting two and a half months for fans. The first month was especially fortutous to the fandom as they filmed on location which gave fans in Toronto the opportunity to watch filming. That spawned set photos (from fans and the press), as well as set reports from fans on the scene. Several fan sites, including TMI Source, were invited to the Toronto set in September and got to speak with the actors about their characters and tour the set. Those reports and interviews with the cast will be unveiled next year.

JESSICA POSTIGO WORKING ON THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES SCRIPT

City of Ashes

On only the second day of filming we learned that Sony was already preparing for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES. Jessica Postigo, who penned the script for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, announced that she had begun writing THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES script. Of course whether or not CITY OF ASHES gets made depends on the success of CITY OF BONES, but it’s clear that Sony has faith in this series to become a major film franchise.

GABRIEL YARED TO COMPOSE THE SCORE

We learned that an Academy Award-winning composer would be in charge of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. Cassandra Clare announced that Gabriel Yared, who won an Oscar for his score on The English Patient, would be scoring the first film in Sony’s potential film franchise.

MTV’s Josh Horowitz visited the Toronto set of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES in late September and on Oct. 11, MTV shared an exclusive First Look at the film with a behind-the-scenes featurette which featured a look at filming on Magnus’ party and interviews with principal cast members Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers and Jemima West.

CASSANDRA CLARE TALKS MORTAL INSTRUMENTS MOVIE AT YALL FEST

Cassandra Clare attended YALL Fest in South Carolina on Nov. 11, where she spoke about THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES on the YA Movies in 2013 panel. We learned about her involvement in the casting process, her thoughts on the adaptation process and some cool inside info, which included that Jamie learned a Bach piece on the piano, which Jace plays in the movie.

Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first official still from THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, along with an interview with author Cassandra Clare about the movie and her books. The first still shows our lead heroine Clary Fray (Lily Collins) “fending off an enemy with the first rune that she’s ever drawn on herself at the amazement of the other Shadowhunters.”

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones teaser poster

MTV debuted an exclusive first look at the teaser poster for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES on Nov. 14. The poster depicts the “mundane” world above and the world of the Shadowhunters below with a beautiful shot of the New York skyline featuring the tagline: “There is a world hidden within our own. Worlds will collide.” The poster is such a great concept depicting how each of these worlds exist side-by-side.

TEASER TRAILER DEBUT

Fans were anxiously counting down the days to the release of the teaser trailer for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES and on Nov. 14 at 10:30 p.m. fans flocked to MTV.com to watch the exclusive premiere along with commentary from author Cassandra Clare. Fans were more than satisifed with a good minute and 46 seconds worth of footage that depicted the dark tone and bad-ass Shadowhunter action. The trailer racked up more than 600,000 views by morning and had more views on the official website and YouTube.

Teen.com shared the second official still from THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES on Dec. 13, which showed Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) front-and-center with fellow Shadowhunters Isabelle (Jemima West) and Alec (Kevin Zegers) and the blue-haired demon from the pivotal early scene at the Pandemonium club.
